In Which the President* of the US Calls Himself “The Chosen One”

Weird • Views: 36,497

So far today, Trump has called himself:

  • The Chosen One
  • The King of Israel
  • The Second Coming of God

Just thought you might like to know that the person with his finger on the trigger of America’s nuclear arsenal appears to be losing the last of his marbles.

And that’s only a small selection of the absolutely insane things he’s been saying today.

He also reiterated his antisemitic “disloyal Jews” statements, of course.

And threatened to release “thousands” of ISIS terrorists into European countries.

And used mass shooting victims as pawns to stroke his ego, again.

And said he had a magic solution to veteran suicides — a “stimulant.”

And once again, floated the idea of being president for life. This is not a joke.

And there’s even more, but I have to stop now because I’m feeling a little ill.

re: #17 Charles Johnson

The whole situation is nuts, but one aspect that is blatantly untenable is the idea that Trump is going to be able to run a second campaign.

He currently has very few official events and has rest days at his resort most weeks.

Today he has two events and only just has enough energy to get him through.

For any campaign, he’s meant be flying around the country holding multiple events for weeks on end? That’s just not physically possible in his state. To be clear, I couldn’t do it either despite being 30 years younger than him, as campaigning is hard work.

The GOP needs to be planning what happens when Trump departs, not just pretending that he’ll be able to make it through.

As a kid, our neighbor across the street grew tomotoes. No one in the household ate fresh tomatoes, he grew them to make sauce. Every August, we got bunches of George’s tomatoes every day. Bread from Ruth and Harry’s (a local bakery), a little mayo, and tomatoe sandwiches all month long.

In a rational world, Trump wouldn’t have won a single delegate in 2016. In a semi-rational world the GOP would have turned on him a year ago and we’d discussing whether Ted Cruz wants to pull a Reagan and run against President Pence in the primary. Basically the president runs for re-election by being president. Rose Garden events that aren’t officially campaign events but reminds voters that he is the president and doing the work.

Traditionally it works well if you have a competent president because the president gets in the news for being the president rather than running for president. But in this case, it won’t be any better because he’s a fucking trainwreck in any scenario.

For what it’s worth, the Rose Garden campaign tactic is something that is in every presidential incumbent’s arsenal. It’s one of the reasons that it’s so hard to beat an incumbent - they don’t have to prove they’re presidential, because they are doing presidential things.

Similarly, in congressional and legislative elections, incumbents do something similar by running strong constituency services.

I’m guessing not. A hundred years ago, the Presidency wasn’t the 24/7/365 fishbowl it is today: media coverage was much more limited (and then only the dead-tree “press”): not to mention generally more deferential to Presidential privacy. It’s very hard to imagine Donald Trump (for whom incessant media attention is like a particularly severe addiction) being able to retire to the “Rose Garden” and not have anyone notice.

A more likely scenario - should King Orangeanus stroke out or whatever - is a VERY quick Cabinet meeting, and The Donald getting a timely ride on the 25A bus back to Mar-a-Lago or wherever…

JFC.

Scaramucci said something the other day, something to the effect that once Trump’s gone, we’re going to have to figure out a way to do something akin to a cult de-programming on about half the country.

And you know what? He’s right. We’re gonna have to find some way to de-program at least 40% of the population and that’s no easy task, because they’ve been fed a steady diet of vitriol, hatred, jingoism and xenophobia (topped with apocalyptic nightmare fuel) for the better part of a quarter century (longer if we go back to the John Birch Society and its activities dating back to the 1950s).

We’ve got one hell of a mess on our hands.

It’s embarrassing/scandalous that the President of the US won’t be there. At the same time, it’s probably good. Some actual work might get done, as opposed to Trump showing up late for meetings; not having a fucking clue about anything; and generally distracting from meaningful discussions.

I’m 50 years old - but someday, when I’m well past retirement age, I look forward to telling the young whippersnappers about that day the President of the United States of America said he was the King of the Jews and then continued that he was the second coming of Jesus Christ on Earth. And if that wasn’t enough lunacy for one day, he went on to proclaim to a bunch of reporters that he was “The Chosen One” while doing jazz hands at the sky.

What a time to be alive.

So out here in Burn Barrel Pennsyltucky we had a special election last night.
Tea Bag Tom Marino left and wonderboy Tea Bag rubber stamp shit for fucking brains Fred Keller was elected to take his seat. Freddie boy defeated Dr. Jenn Rager-Kay who I am a patient of that lost to Keller by a large margin but not as much as was expected. She’s a class act. Good person. But she needs to learn when to kick.
I sat and talked with her at the local Dem meetings a few times. She was in Philly for the DNC and supported Hillary, and like a few of my other Democrat friends she was spit on by Bernie supporters. There was a few that came to the meetings. Couldn’t talk to their stupid asses either. Trump/Bernie. Same coin.
I stopped going because I’m already in the deep end and treading water.
Don’t need me asking pointed questions. Might upset people.
So last night she ran against This Turd and lost. That was the seat Keller had. Imagine that.
I could scream.
Fuck these people.

Perhaps our best hope is if he strokes out in while at one of his rallies so that there’s no one but “HIS” people around him. Then they can wait for his triumphant return until hell freezes over (Arthur’ll be back first…)

When John Lewis asks, how can you say no? (I couldn’t, so I said yes)

John Lewis | United States Congressman
xxxx,

Jaime Harrison is running for U.S. Senate in South Carolina against Lindsey Graham.

So I’ll put this as simply as I can: Jaime is exactly the kind of Democrat I want serving alongside me in Congress during these troubled times.

But the GOP is going to pour millions in dirty SuperPAC money into his race.

So I’ve committed to raising $1O,OOO for Jaime this week, but my team tells me we’re still $5,000 short, and our deadline is tomorrow. Will you chip in $50 right now…

I had a random/scary/dystopian thought: if Russia really wanted to screw with the country, they’d put their thumb on the scale next election in favor of Democrats, particularly in reasonably close Senate races, such that Dems took complete control of the federal gov’t. And by thumb on the scale, I mean changing vote totals (which I am fully confident that they did in 2016—I don’t buy that they would get as deep as they did in state voting systems just to see if they could).

Then, some time just prior to the new Congress being sworn in, they’d leak/release evidence showing their work.

I am pretty confident that it would trigger a civil war.

remember this?

1991: A book by John O’Donnell, former president of Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, quoted Trump’s criticism of a black accountant: “Black guys counting my money! I hate it. The only kind of people I want counting my money are short guys that wear yarmulkes every day. … I think that the guy is lazy. And it’s probably not his fault, because laziness is a trait in blacks. It really is, I believe that. It’s not anything they can control.” Trump at first denied the remarks, but later said in a 1997 Playboy interview that “the stuff O’Donnell wrote about me is probably true.”

Oh, and congress has 42 Jewish members. Only two are Republicans. We ain’t all stupid.

finally, Michelle Goldberg at the NYT: “trump uses Jews as human shields.”

Y’all know if Trump loses next year we are going to have one crazy ass lame duck session, right?

I think that’s when Trump’s likely to be at his most dangerous. He knows full well that there’s a good chance that he - and possibly his kids as well - could be looking at some serious criminal charges and the only thing protecting him is the fact that he’s President.

The protection he enjoys goes away on January 20th, 2021 if he loses next November. And that’s got to have him scared shitless.

For what it’s worth, the Rose Garden campaign tactic is something that is in every presidential incumbent’s arsenal. It’s one of the reasons that it’s so hard to beat an incumbent - they don’t have to prove they’re presidential, because they are doing presidential things.

Similarly, in congressional and legislative elections, incumbents do something similar by running strong constituency services.

he will, and constantly does have to ‘prove he’s presidential’

and he’d (theoretically) be limited at official and rose garden type events with what he can say

plus there’d be no audience of significance, no red hats, t-shirts, etc

“I could exercise power and do a thing that would upset you.”
“I’m laughing because I could actually do it. I don’t think you could stop me.”
“Just by saying it aloud, and breaking social norms, I’m showing I have power. That’s why it’s funny.”

It’s like when right wingers tell “jokes” that are just the stereotypes they really believe: the “humor” is that they feel powerful and their target deserves harm.

It’s why gun culture participants play with phrasings of “I could kill you, be nice.” as humor.

The Access Hollywood tape wasn’t just a confession, it was a worldview: I can do this; they’ll let you do it; that’s delightful.

Yeah, like I said in the earlier comment, he’s uniquely fucked up as presidents go. And he’s obviously been the least presidential president in American history. Previous incumbents have been able to walk the tightrope of official/campaign stuff in the past, but again, they’ve been generally competent. Trump is not, so it most likely won’t work for him.

Trump’s MO as a Con Man is to at first “joke” about something not considered normal in order to test the waters and more specifically his mark’s reaction to it.

If he senses an opening he will further “look into” his suggestion and offer up “many people” who are in support of his insanity.

A thought that disturbs me is that I suspect his poverty of language is not just ignorance, but a kind of magical thinking about labels.

Invoking nasty invalidates a woman and doesn’t even follow one dictionary definition of the word; it’s a cloud of negatives that are feminine, and once nastiness is invoked, you’re fair game. You haven’t been deferential. So you smell bad, and are on your period, and are bleeding out the face, are unattractive and fat and probably have Bad Sex of some variety.

This disturbs me because I think it is part of his appeal to his base—they deeply enjoy these Magic Words and the implication that the world’s full of targets who deserve cruelty, and implicitly that enjoying cruelty and sadism towards acceptable targets is noble—because Trump’s use of labels is only slightly more crude than other reactionary media figures.

President Trump says the Denmark Prime Minister’s statement on his proposal to buy Greenland was “nasty” and says all she had to do was tell him no. Says he cancelled his visit because “you don’t talk to the United States that way.”

He is not the United States, he is the President and his proposal was ludicrous. Had it been directed through proper international diplomatic channels, it might have at least been worthy of a measured response, but as it most likely came out of a tweet or an offhand remark, it deserved the swatting down that it received.

This is just more evidence of how out of touch the Democrats have become

Do keep in mind that the EC gave us Abraham Lincoln…without a majority.

I would be for keeping the EC but

a) reapportioned so that it represents states based on population, not on the size of their congressional delegation

and

b) so that it only kicks in if no single candidate receives a clear majority

or banning that, a runoff election system.

African grays are incredible mimics. Had one that could do squeaky doors, could bark like each of our 5 dogs, etc. More than once I was sure the spouse was home, heard her doing things in the kitchen, talking to the dogs and them responding, only to discover it was all the parrot.

So now I’m imagining a T- rex mimicking mating calls of other dinosaurs and then sitting back and waiting for dinner to show up. Yikes.

I’ve shifted over the years on the Electoral College from mostly agnostic to believing we should probably abolish it. The way it has evolved, it has rendered many voter’s ballots irrelevant. If you’re a Republican in California or a Democrat in Wyoming, your vote doesn’t really matter, because the margins in those states are so wide.

But if we go to a national popular vote, a Republican no longer has to win California for those votes to matter, they just have to close the margin in the state. Same for the Democrats in Wyoming. It actually puts more votes in play, rather than less. It would also likely make presidential campaigns a lot more expensive because a smart nominee/campaign is going to look to invest resources where they hadn’t previously invested. But you take the good with the bad.

The EC would probably be better if we didn’t have an artificial cap of 435 members of the House. But even then, you’d have to either award electors proportionally or via district to be best representative.

I think one of the times we were discussing reapportionment around here, someone suggested the idea that House seats be determined by the size of the smallest state. Basically smallest population gets 1 seat and then every other state gets a seat for that many people.

That set up within the electoral college would get us closer to the right sized voices.

However, a big increase in the size of the House and proportional award of electors rather than winner-take-all, neither of which require a constitutional amendment, could make it better. But its up to the states to decide how they award their electors.

I think Madison and Hamilton expected electors to be chosen by district and to have the freedom to cast their votes as they saw fit… think of a legislative body with one vote to cast. And while that was the case early on (and is how Jefferson (a Democrat-Republican) ended up VP to Adams (a Federalist)), the state parties quickly changed that.

One of the reasons I always laugh at the “we need a constitutional convention” arguments that usually come from the right is that the last time we had one to “make minor changes” we got an entirely new constitution. And that was after like 15 years. It’s been 200+ now, the idea that we wouldn’t end up with a very different system is sort of ridiculous.

Messing with the Senate is basically beyond the reach of constitutional amendments. I.e., no amendment can removes a state’s equal suffrage in the Senate without its consent.

So the only way to tackle the Senate is with a full-blown rewrite of the Constitution, which would be the pan-dimensional clusterfuck of all time.

I’ve used two arguments:
1. the one you just presented (which is that each vote counts equally — someone red in a blue state has the same effect as someone red in a red state). People currently can be discouraged from voting if they figure their vote doesn’t matter — which is true if your state isn’t a battleground state.

2. The current setup of winner-take- all — even if electors were truly proportional by state — can lead to a candidate winning 60+% of the popular vote and losing the electoral college.

But there is another overlooked factor: states that have large voter disenfranchisement (e.g. Florida) play too large a role; representatives are allocated by population size, not eligible voters. If your voting population is 10% less than it should be, then your state should have 10% less impact on the results. Indeed after the passage of the 15th amendment, African Americans were finally counted as a full person BUT in southern states they were barred from voting — so the South got even more electoral influence than they originally had under the 3/5 compromise. Southern states are still stopping people of color from voting but benefit from their presence in the number of electors they are assigned.

Interestingly enough, there is a provision in the 14th Amendment that covers this:

But when the right to vote at any election for the choice of electors for President and Vice President of the United States, Representatives in Congress, the Executive and Judicial officers of a State, or the members of the Legislature thereof, is denied to any of the male inhabitants of such State, being twenty-one years of age, and citizens of the United States, or in any way abridged, except for participation in rebellion, or other crime, the basis of representation therein shall be reduced in the proportion which the number of such male citizens shall bear to the whole number of male citizens twenty-one years of age in such State.

The franchise amendments probably means it’s any voting eligible inhabitants over the age of 18. But I don’t believe this power has ever been exercised. And I suspect that to try and exercise it now would be a grand clusterfuck

Like “nasty” it’s more of a gesture than word, a vague indication of what frame the addressed should use: that this person is not-a-person, fundamentally the opposite of Us in an antagonistic and threatening way…

…and thus fair game.

It pretty much always comes down to marking people as fair game.

Interestingly enough, there is a provision in the 14th Amendment that covers this:

The franchise amendments probably means it’s any voting eligible inhabitants over the age of 18. But I don’t believe this power has ever been exercised. And I suspect that to try and exercise it now would be a grand clusterfuck

Of course, those who are disenfranchised now are excluded based on felony records, which is permitted under the amendment or because there are other restrictions (obstacles to getting valid voter id or limitations on early voting or insufficient booths to vote at a polling place).

While we’re doing all this constitutional conventioning, we might well ask why a country this size needs 51+ states to administer it, given 21st Cent technology an’ all. A dozen regions could better manage it.

I wouldn’t doubt for a second that if there were a convention, that there would immediately be movements in at least California and Texas arguing for independence. Probably Hawaii and Alaska as well.

As far as combining states and/or redrawing lines, it’d be incredibly complicated, but possible.

Which is weird - because reading Mette Frederiksen’s wiki, I would imagine she would be considered somewhat/moderately “right-leaning” by Danish standards* - especially on immigration issues. Although I wouldn’t expect Trump to know or care about such details : I’m sure his main piss-off is personal: that she (publicly) rebuffed an offer from His Orange High Holiness (stupidity of the offer notwithstanding) - an act of lese-majeste not to be tolerated…..

*DISCLAIMER: not particularly conversant with the details of Danish politics: any polite correction with be appeciated.

The dozen or so federal regions already exist. We just have to turn a lot of statehouses into paintball ranges.

Meanwhile, in mass shooter news:

A possible mass shooting was thwarted when Long Beach police arrested a disgruntled Marriot employee who had access to weapons and allegedly told a coworker he planned to shoot everyone he saw at his workplace, the city’s police chief said Wednesday.

Rodolfo Montoya, 37, was arrested without incident at his home in Huntington Beach on Tuesday, according to Long Beach Police Department Chief Robert Luna.

Investigators searched the home and seized multiple firearms, including an assault rifle, hundreds of rounds of ammunition and high-capacity magazines, Luna told reporters at a news conference where the arrest was announced.

No criminal record, so he was legally allowed to own those guns under California law.

Also, apparently there is/was a live shooter situation in Lancaster.

I didn’t make it to the end either, but I got further than you. Sadly.
