No, they don’t understand him at all. Do you really think Trump is understands why Putin in his own words finds the fall of the USSR to be a great geopolitical strategy? Trump just sees a strongman and thinks that’s what a leader should be. Trump may understand manipulation but he doesn’t understand Russian geopolitics for a second. Do not give him credit that he doesn’t deserve.

Trump doesn’t know or care about history, but he may understand that Putin wants to reassemble the Soviet Union and, since Ukraine was part of that nation, Trump is fine with Putin recapturing it and reincorporating it into the Russian Federation.
