Dude, on your back getting hit trapped under an assailant is one very scary place to be. Do you think one in that spot should wait for serious injury before escalating the force? Is that reasonable to you?

The wounds don’t suggest severe pounding, except for the broken nose. It suggests to me that Trayvon belted him hard once and the rest was less so.

If Zimmerman’s arms were free enough to pull the gun, they were likely free enough to stop the pounding.
