An independent voter is either a temporarily embarrassed Republican, or the kind of meathead than can vote either D or R in the 21st century.

Either way, there is no point in trying to tailor D policy proposals specifically to appeal to these voters.

Ds should focus on policies that make sense that address priorities of their base, and on GOTV of that base.

Independents can either come along for the ride or be part of the problem.
