my own opinion -

Government should not marry people.

Marriage should be religious for those that want it… but churches who refuse “equal protection” for *all* couples of relevent ages seeking to get married should lose tax exempt status.

Government should issue certificates that confer the benefits of coupledom to all that want them… and if people want to build a ceremony around that they can, and still be “married” in a church under the eyes of which ever Deity they have a subscription to
