No, they didn’t. We weren’t the bad guys, the Communists were, just as Saddam Hussein was. Just because we shouldn’t have gone to war with a faction does not mean that said faction wasn’t worse than us.

DF, as someone very deeply tied to Vietnam (Phan Thiết, the capital of Bnh Thuận province, is where my son was born) I must respectfully disagree. The South Vietnamese government was incredibly corrupt and far more evil than the Northern government ever was. And no, I don’t think the North was sparkley happy unicorn rainbow land. But I’ve yet to see any civil war where either side was perfect. We backed the wrong side in Vietnam compounding the mistake we made when Truman allowed the French to retake colonial possession - directly against FDR’s plans.

Even today, it’s a better country to live in than, for example, Thailand. At least in Vietnam the poor will have access to education and health care which gives them a chance at the jobs companies like Intel are bringing in.
