Like a pathetic schoolyard bully who’s drawn a line in the sand and beats up people who cross it, Obama is going to war in Syria simply because he drew a “red line” against the use of chemical weapons and President Assad flouted it. (Needless to say, it isn’t even clear if it was Assad who ordered the attack using a nerve agent, since at least some of the leaked intelligence shows that it was a local commander who intended the use to have much more limited, local effect, not a mass killing of hundreds.)

Gee. Kind of defending the commander there too.

Kerry’s statement.

blogs.state.gov

“The President has been clear: Any action that he might decide to take will be a limited and tailored response to ensure that a despot’s brutal and flagrant use of chemical weapons is held accountable,” Secretary Kerry said. “And ultimately, ultimately, we are committed — we remain committed, we believe it’s the primary objective — is to have a diplomatic process that can resolve this through negotiation, because we know there is no ultimate military solution. It has to be political. It has to happen at the negotiating table, and we are deeply committed to getting there.”

re: #72 Charles Johnson

I hear you there. If I had to speculate there’s a few options that could fit the “narrow, limited” definition:

- bombing the units or the leaders of the units responsible for a limited period
- attacking the facilities and infrastructure for a limited time
- backing France, Turkey, and others with tech and intel (C3, battlefield coordination Nato style) while they attack the infrastructure or Units or both.
- backing foreign troop manned patriot batteries for defense of the rebels

of course those are just a few of the options.

So if the US does a military strike on Syria, it is supposed to:

1) be severe enough to deter future use of chemical weapons

2) be mild enough that it doesn’t alter the Syrian balance of power

3) have no surprise at all

4) not get the US bogged down in a lengthy Syrian intervention.

I can’t tell if this is a case of pick any two of the inconsistent objectives, or pick any one.

Sheesh. The old “it’s a chemical and it’s a weapon so it’s a prohibited chemical weapon” trick. This is a lie, a stupid word game. Ask yourselves, how is napalm a “chemical weapon” but trinitrotoluene (TNT) is not? It’s simple, it isn’t. “Chemical weapon” is a euphemism for substances that kill by chemically toxic effect, ie poison gases and aerosols. It specifically excludes substances that kill by gross physical effect, which incendiaries certainly do.
Shit like this is the reason I do not believe in the sincerity of any peace activist.

[Shea’s] son [Alejandro] was born with Spinal Muscular Atrophy which limits his ability to move. The ability to explore one’s environment as a toddler is really important to development so [Shea] and his wife have been looking into assistive technology. Their health insurance paid for a medical stroller when he was nine-months old and has told the family they need to wait five years for a powered wheelchair. Rather than wait, [Shea] took it upon himself to hack a wheelchair his son could control.

He found a used adult-sized motorized wheelchair on eBay for about $800. Not cheap, but way more affordable than a brand new unit. This type of chair is made to be controlled with a joystick, an option not available to his son at this point. Foot control was an option if he could figure out how to build an interface.

Oh good grief, Chris Hayes has on Amy Goodman, blaming the US for being the example for using chemical weapons, going back to Vietnam, using napalm and phosphorus.

No doubt the US has been wrong about using such methods; however, to lump this admin in the same boat w/Nixon and others is irresponsible and slanted journalism.

Assad can use chemical weapons against Syrian citizens because what we did in Vietnam.

Thanks for clearing that up Amy and thanks for going on the record how anyone can do anything because there is something that America did wrong in its history.

And now I no longer wonder why some people think the left hates America.

I really liked Hayes when he filled in for Maddow. Never got around to watching his first show, because screw getting up that early for politics on the weekend.

I was going to add the primetime show to my podcast list, but now? Good Lord, Hayes is going to blame Obama for Pearl Harbor next.

I know peace activists you’d respect, and who don’t confuse the two, ‘cuz they’re veterans. I used to bartend at a place with a lot of Vietnam Vets who’d gone the hippy pacifist route afterwards. There was a core group of four infantry guys, an air cav guy, a couple of medics who were basically still acting as the medics after all that time, they were by far the most responsible out of all of them. Anyway, they were nice happy friendly drinkers and were all part of Veterans for Peace. They’re occasionally a little dumb on Israel but otherwise a good group, and these guys were very much just “If you knew what it was like you’d never let your boy go”.

138 Shiplord Kirel  Fri, Aug 30, 2013 7:13:37pm

I’ve been ambivalent about a strike on Syria, partly because I hate the idea of still more war. I am still not happy with it, but my position is shifting. We have the justification, but I have doubted that we had the credibility to do it. There seems to be a significant risk of something worse succeeding the Assad regime, although it may be selling the Syrian people short to expect that a fanatical Islamist regime can actually reverse 60 years of secularism and hold power there.
I also think there is little risk of a confrontation with the Russians over this. Putin is nothing if not rational so he knows that his alliance with Assad has outlived its usefulness. Otoh, it would bring confrontation with Iran, which is unlikely to go well for the Iranians and which would provide an opportunity to isolate and destroy the Hezbollah forces in the Levant once and for all.
Domestically it will serve to galvanize the disloyal, insane conspiracist forces of right and left, bringing them into the open and allowing them to be seen for the antisemites, racists, and liars they really are.

The story in question:

Cesar Garcia steals Chandler ambulance, drives to Guadalupe home

A Guadalupe man walked out of an Arizona police station Sunday morning and allegedly decided to steal an ambulance and drive home.

Joe Favazzo, spokesman for the Chandler Police Department, said 33-year-old Cesar Garcia was arrested Sunday morning for having an open container at a store near north Alma School Road and Warner Road.

He was released with a citation for the misdemeanor crime.

According to police, Garcia then hopped into a parked ambulance and drove it to his home in Guadalupe.

The suspect originally told police he would walk home. The ambulance was located by the Tempe Police Department a short time later.

Memo to Cesar: You escalated your crime by several fucktons.

From at a low-level misdemeanor to a high-level felony. How stupid is this guy?

I don’t think so. Syria has long been the primary conduit for Iranian weapons shipments to Hezbollah, as well as providing a sanctuary for rest, training, and storage. That would have to come through Lebanon entirely if Assad falls. Pressure from Syria was a major factor in assuring Lebanese cooperation in the past. Without it, Hezbollah will be unable to maintain the facilities and control they have now in Lebanon, let alone expand it to make up for the loss of Syrian support.

I still think Hezbollah will be fine. Their oversized influence in Lebanese political structure has been bought and paid for and is well entrenched into the system. Hezbollah may overplay their hand by igniting Sunni/Shia tensions (as they did with the mosque bombing last week) or trying to entice Israel into action but their influence in Lebanon will probably continue until the mullahs lose power in Iran. It’ll happen eventually but probably not any time soon.
It does look like the Arab Spring might eventually be the end of political Islam. It will take a while longer.

Meanwhile, a candidate (TRIPLE-WORD-SCORE BONUS: GUESS WHICH PARTY) for Attorney General here in the State That Sorely Misses Molly Ivins advises everyone to marry as soon as you’re old enough to start squeezing out the kids, have as many kids as possible, and homeschool them all, because 9 million households doing exactly that couldn’t possibly fuck up anything. Also, punish single parents with higher taxes.

Our good friend David Barton has done some wonderful research…

[snip]

An officeholder for abortion is also likely an officeholder who will take away your gun, take away your money, take away your freedom to assemble, take away your freedom of speech, and take away your freedom from unreasonable search and seizure.

[snip]

So make it easy on yourself. Don’t’ have sex until you get married, get married at a relatively early age, and then have lots of kids. Contrary to conventional wisdom, having kids early, not late, is liberating for you and your wife. You will never ever regret it, and our economy will thank you for it.

You may think this is “only” a fringe kook candidate, and you’re right, of course. But this is Texas in the Age of Obama, which means that a good old-fashioned criminal dirtbag like Tom DeLay just can’t cut it anymore. That leaves a lot of room, doesn’t it? Given that 1.5% of Syrian casualties over the past two years were generated in around an hour (a good working definition of WMD), I expect the rhetoric of the day is playing down just how robust the response is going to be. The Syrians have about $1 billion worth of Mig 29s. They have several billion invested in their air defense systems.

Destroying them wouldn’t significantly change the war on the ground, but it would result in a tremendous amount of butthurt for the regime, costing them scads of money and making them much more vulnerable within the region. If you don’t think it can be done, you don’t know your history:

And before going to bed I’ll add that I wasn’t trying to gloat or mock any point of view with my #188. It was intended as a piece of dispassionate analysis and contains no subtext.

Subtext isn’t needed. It’s a blatant thing.

We’ve got a permanent underclass in this country made up of millions of immigrants that come here to do the work no American wants to do. We benefit from that work. At the same time, there are people who would deport, imprison, or shoot those same immigrants and their families.

If we suddenly decided that we were going to open our borders to millions of refugees, all hell would break loose in this country.

Republican Mississippi sheriff indicted on 31 counts for abusing powers

The sheriff for Jackson County, Mississippi was indicted Friday on 31 criminal counts and accused of abusing his position to not only order a female deputy to give him sexual favors, but pursue a murder case against the wishes of an investigating detective.

WKRG-TV reported on Friday that the charges against Sheriff Mike Byrd include 10 counts of embezzlement, and 10 counts of fraud, two counts of extortion and one count of perjury, among other charges. Authorities contend that Byrd, a Republican currently in his fourth term in office, has used his position to target personal and political opponents and fudge his record to boost his re-election prospects.

One of the extortion charges in the indictment concerns an accusation that Byrd threatened the deputy in 2012 with a “bad recommendation to other law enforcement agencies” if she did not perform sexual acts and left the department. When she refused, the deputy was forbidden from taking part in a department program and moved to another work station in retaliation.

She’s blurring the distinction between college-age affairs with faculty and younger-age seductions by faculty, either in her muddled head or in her muddled prose.

You could make an argument that someone 16 or older (mileage may vary) is old enough to deal with having an affair with a teacher, that is to say, be somewhat an equal partner in the affair, but such arguments have no merit when dealing with students 15 and under. Then we are talking about clear-cut child rape/molestation. The writer does not address this issue at all, even while mentioning the statutory rape conviction involving a 14-year-old.

re: #146 Charles Johnson

She writes:

To the best of my knowledge, these situations were all consensual in every honest meaning of the word, even if society would like to embrace the fantasy that a high school student can’t consent to sex.

That’s quite some fallacy there.

I look at this in a way that is similar to Lewinsky and Clinton - yes, it was “consensual” but it was still wrong, and I’m not talking about wedding vows (although that is another problem.)

Inherent in human relationships is the asymmetry that exists due to authority, power, and influence. In my eyes the problem with a teenage student having sex with their teacher is in the very structure of the relationship having already been forced upon the student (by their parents and by the law). By the nature of compulsory education the student has no choice to consent being there or being in a relationship with everyone around her, whether they be other students or admin and teachers.

Karasik is fixated on “sex” without really accepting that humans will bond to those who are in their immediate surroundings whether or not they chose to originally be there of their own free will. Students will bond to their teachers, at least until something forces them away. We as humans all do this - this is why society even exists.

Maybe this is too marxist of me, but society is not a set of equal relationships. Rather, it is composed of a spectrum of asymmetric relationships, which on occasion some may seem “equal”.

The authority dynamic in a teacher-student relationship, to me anyway, rules out the idea of romantic encounters between them, at least well until a later age.

re: #203 Justanotherhuman

Yeah, her argument is a little odd in some respects. I get one of her points, that it’s possible in some cases that the student was a willful and willing participant in a teacher-student romance. Setting aside the question of the ethics of such an affair, I’ve known high school students who were pretty mature and were dating college guys because, well, high school boys are often really immature, if not complete dopes. Karasik doesn’t get into the ethical question at all, which bothers me more as a teacher than the sex question does. There is such a power disparity in teacher-student relationships that it makes good sense to set down limits on how close teachers and students can get emotionally as well as physically. Additionally, schools and teachers are acting in loco parentis legally, so any sort of sexy shenanigans is a clear violation of the school’s and teacher’s legal, moral and ethical standing. This is one big reason why people get so bent out of shape when teachers are caught bonking their students. The other big reason, which Karasik tries to present, is that American society would like to pretend that teenagers and teachers don’t ever think about sex and love at all, never, ever. A century ago, a married female teacher had to quit her teaching job once she got pregnant, because … I have no idea. Now, people freak out when decent teachers are discovered to have posed nude or done a porn flick when they were young and stupid. Teachers are supposed to be like monks and nuns, or saints.

I’ve taught for 30 years, and of course been a high school student. In all those 34 years, there were only a handful of clear-cut cases of teacher-student dalliances. In each case, the teacher in question was sacked, but I am not aware of any criminal charges being filed. And I am speaking only of pre-college students. College is a whole ‘nuther ball of wax.

206 Justanotherhuman  Sat, Aug 31, 2013 5:34:59am

re: #205 wheat-dogghazi

Yes, loco parentis was exactly what I was trying to get across.

When a person reaches 18, which is usually, but not always, the case in college, then it’s different, because the “child” is legally an adult (but some are still stupid in many respects). And even that can upset the balance between student/teacher because it brings ethics into play on the part of the instructor or professor and is a lesson many times in using sexuality to get what you want for the student—more attention, better grades, etc, in addition to causing all kinds of complications among peers, etc.

I come from an entirely different era, but I do remember having “crushes” on certain teachers, both male and female in HS. It would have never occurred to me to have a sexual relationship with any of them, and when I was 15, I finally met a boy. Three years, and 2 “boys” later, I was married and pregnant, and 3 yrs later, was divorced w/2 children. Neither of us was ready for any of it, esp him (he wanted an “open” marriage—I didn’t).

I think in many ways teens today are mature in a lot of areas, even precocious, but that doesn’t mean they’re emotionally ready for what they’re learning so early.

To the Editor:

Adam Frank, in “Welcome to the Age of Denial” (Op-Ed, Aug. 22), seems bitter that no one is listening to him and his fellow astrophysicists. After all, they have found the truth.

Let me remind Dr. Frank that the theory of relativity is still a theory, as is the Big Bang theory. As a physician in private practice for almost 25 years, I have made it a point to have an open discourse with my patients when they question medical or scientific fact. Too often I have seen outcomes defy those facts.

Let those of us who may have been educated in the ivory towers of academia abandon the notion that we belong to a society that holds knowledge of the universal truths of humankind and the cosmos. They should be used as guidelines rather than as intransigent blocks to creative approaches and thought.

The universal truth that I live by is the understanding that the challenges of everyday life have a way of creating individual realities that, to scientists, may fly in the face of logic and fact; however, they are logical and factual to those who experience and live with them.

Superhero wannabe shoots arrow wrapped with marijuana at county jail, tells police he was aiming at squirrel

A Washington man drew the string of his bow, aimed at the second-floor recreation area of the Whatcom County jail, and loosed an arrow with a baggie of marijuana attached to it.

An apparent fan of Legolas, Hawkeye and Catniss Everdeen, 36-year-old David Wayne Jordan, discovered a tricky way to smuggle drugs into the penitentiary.

The-bow-and-arrow-weed-killer fired the projectile high into the sky, toward a mesh screen near the top of the second-story, fresh-air exercise area for inmates, said Whatcom County Sheriff, Bill Elfo.

Evidently, Jordan was no crack shot. Instead of hitting his target, the arrow landed harmlessly on the room.

While in custody, Jordan told authorities he was aiming at a squirrel (a secret squirrel?), though he failed to comment if the attached baggie of marijuana was a flight stabilizer or just a generous gift to the rodent.

Good morning from cloudy western New York State!

Quiet this morning. Brother is off working for a few hours and my SIL is sleeping. Sat outside for a while with a cup of tea and watched birds visit the feeder and gave pets to one of the barn cats. Big difference in noise levels and types from the center of Philadelphia.

Place is quite a bit different from my last visit in the spring. My niece is off to college, so there is one less person about. The elder barn cat has disappeared (about a week ago) and since it’s a female this is probably more permanent than the male one wandering off for a few days.

And my SIL is now basically in hospice care for her cancer. Has opted to stop doing any radiation or chemo treatments. Doing traditional Chinese medicine, and some western meds to deal with symptoms, nothing more. So, with her now limited mobility she is essentially living on the first floor and not using the upstairs rooms. She also gets tired very quickly and can’t talk for any extended period.

My brother is adapting to this, but I am not surprised.

Maybe but that would mean we’d still be dealing with Saddam too. The no fly zones would be over 20 years old by now, with occasional targeted strikes and no end in sight. I doubt expanding the same operation to Syria would be very popular.

Except for the part where there are at least nine faction in Syria and we don’t like most of them.

And also, putting boots on the ground is risky no matter what else is going on. Even if we weren’t in Iraq or Afghanistan there is still the lesson of Somalia — doesn’t matter if they hate each other, they’ll band together and fight against an invading army then get back to destroying each other.

That’s a really weird response, unless you think that everyone in the anti-war faction were saying the Vietnamese communists were ‘better’ than us. It was mostly about “This war is going to kill millions and wind up achieving nothing”, and they were right.

As I said before, I know a lot of perfectly sensible, non-cartoonish anti-war protesters. There’s very few American military interventions, especially unilateral ones, that you can point to and say “That was a success”. Even Afghanistan, which was as legitimate a ‘war’ as we’ve had in awhile, has achieved only a very, very, very narrow success.

So true. Most of the people who work w/my g-son are typical of the right hand column. Most have to work, even if they areteens, also, to bring money into the household, such as the 19 yr old who lives with his 61 yr old mother who has a sewing business she runs out of her apt. They were much better off before the divorce. He’s a good kid who should be in college; I loan him books.

DF, as someone very deeply tied to Vietnam (Phan Thiết, the capital of Bình Thuận province, is where my son was born) I must respectfully disagree. The South Vietnamese government was incredibly corrupt and far more evil than the Northern government ever was. And no, I don’t think the North was sparkley happy unicorn rainbow land. But I’ve yet to see any civil war where either side was perfect. We backed the wrong side in Vietnam compounding the mistake we made when Truman allowed the French to retake colonial possession - directly against FDR’s plans.

Even today, it’s a better country to live in than, for example, Thailand. At least in Vietnam the poor will have access to education and health care which gives them a chance at the jobs companies like Intel are bringing in.

There were very valid reasons against going to war in both Vietnam and Iraq. Those reasons have since been further validated by time and experience.
