The railgun would have longer range than existing guns, cheaper to fire rounds on target than missiles for comparable range and effect ($25,000 per round, versus a $1m missile or more to do comparable damage). It’s also safer for the ship since the rounds are kinetic, rather than explosive (less explosives on board the ship/vehicle), and they can carry more rounds without replenishment.

The ammo tech for the railgun is also being applied to other conventional arms too.

That whole Mass * Velocity thing in practice.
