I think it should be similar to education. The government should provide health insurance for everyone who wants it. Those who want private insurance can pay for it if they think it will provide better coverage.

As it essentially is in Canada. Interestingly in Canada, birth control is not a covered item, as is the case with most prescriptions (unless you are over 65). Abortion is however covered in Canada by the government. If you are under 65 and want your medicine covered (the pill) you need private insurance that covers that. The one caveat is that generally prescriptions in Canada are a fraction of US prices so the pill is roughly $12-15 per month from social services providers.
