The first named storm of the year is already churning away in the Gulf, and now packs winds of 60mph. It’s expected to dump significant rains as it makes its way up the East Coast, and the NYC metro is expecting 2-4 inches of rain, with localized heavier amounts. Coastal flooding and river flooding is possible.

Oh, and because of sequestration, the folks who monitor and maintain the flood gauges have reduced staffing.

But remember - the GOP thinks this is a good thing. Reduce the size of government, and no one will miss a thing.

Except when the warnings don’t come in time and the GOP complains that government isn’t doing its job. The reason that we aren’t getting as good predictions as we should is that we’re not funding things the way that is necessary to maintain and upgrade the systems to make those predictions, as well as fund the staffing levels to a point that allows better predictions to be made.
