More: Muslim Group’s TN Forum With Feds Disrupted by Heckling

MANCHESTER — Hundreds of people turned out at the Manchester Convention Center Tuesday evening for an event billed as a discussion of public discourse in a diverse society, with a particular focus on the Muslim religion.

People were turned away at the door because the facility was too full. Some grew angry and started hurling terms such as “communist,” “socialist” and “Muslim” at law enforcement officials.

The indoor event, sponsored by the American Muslim Advisory Council, was countered by a large group of protesters, both outside and inside the facility. Some who made it in before admission was cut off continuously interrupted the speakers.

The interruptions were so intense at times that attendee Elaine Smith, 55, of Bedford County, said she was afraid of other audience members.

“I came here because I wanted to learn something … but I couldn’t hear because the audience was so disrespectful,” she said. “I cried when I got here. It makes me really sad especially because these people say they’re Christians. The God I worship doesn’t teach hate.”

During the keynote speech given by Bill Killian, U.S. Attorney of the Eastern District of Tennessee, audience members continually interrupted, making it difficult to understand what was said. Killian brought a PowerPoint presentation that covered the First and 14th amendments and what constitutes a hate crime, among other things. He read the First Amendment verbatim, between interruptions.

Kenneth Moore, FBI special agent in charge of the Eastern Tennessee District, took the podium after Killian.”Our presence here tonight has generated some controversy,” he said. “People think we want to step on and stifle their First Amendment rights. Nothing could be further from the truth.”

Moore said the FBI was continually working to build relationships with worshippers of Islam and other faiths because “they are essential” to keeping the country safe.

Protester Larry McIntosh, 54, of Manchester, said he was skeptical of Killian and Moore.

“I feel like (these) men are attempting to intimidate people with the freedom of speech and that bothers me,” he said. “I would like to say that Muslims have a right to live here and worship freely, but I do not think they have the right to change American law to fit Sharia law. Violence no matter where it comes from bothers me.”

WTF is he talking about? Yeah, freedom of speech and other Constitutional protections are only for Real Americans™, not Muslims. When Muslims exercise their freedoms or seek protection, then it suddenly becomes intimidation/creeping Sharia.

2 Locker  Wed, Jun 5, 2013 2:41:52pm

Mr McIntosh seems to think that Muslims are trying to change American law to fit Sharia law. I wonder where he got that idea? I also wonder how that could possibly bother Christians who spend a large majority of their political capital in constant efforts to change American law to fit Christian law.

I had a rwnj tell me with a straight face that Christians are the only religious group that is persecuted in America.

5 sauceruney  Wed, Jun 5, 2013 4:03:42pm

This in TN, where Christian law is responsible for “dry counties”. If they only realized how much that fits in with the Sharia Law they fear.

re: #5 sauceruney

They have serious problems with connecting their own actions/beliefs to Sharia Law, but the truth is that they have many things in common and dry counties is only one of them. They think nothing of taking away a woman’s right to have control of her own body, disenfranchising millions of their fellow Americans with claims of rampant non-existent voter fraud and voter ID laws, denying Americans a chance at earning a college degree by not giving a sh*t about student loan interest rates, privatizing K-12 education so that only certain Americans have an opportunity to graduate from high school, or of using the media to spread lies and propaganda that is meant to convince Americans that their policies/beliefs/actions/attitudes are benign, when they are not.

Sigh… That’s not that far from where I live, maybe 90 minutes or so. I find it sadly amusing (if there is such a thing) that the sign in the beginning of the video say “Speak up for Freedom”, and they confuse “Disruptive Behaviour” for “Free Speech”.

Of course the 7 Mountain Dominionists, the “No Choice” and “Don’t Say Gay” crowds aren’t trying to emplace their own rigid and sect specific religious views on a society. Oh no, they are just doing Gods Work.

Freedom of Speech does not equal Freedom to Screetch

16 Kragar  Wed, Jun 5, 2013 7:04:03pm

Republican pushes ‘license to bully’ gay and lesbian service members

Rep. John Fleming (R-LA), who proposed the amendment (PDF), said the measure would protect the religious liberties of the Armed Forces. Critics, however, alleged the amendment would make it harder for military commanders to take action against religiously-motivated harassment.

“This amendment is nothing but a thinly veiled attempt to sabotage the climate of inclusion and respect for all that our Commander-in-Chief and Secretary of Defense have called for in our military, and would create a license to bully, harass, and discriminate against service members based on religion, gender, sexual orientation, or any number of other characteristics,” Army veteran and OutServe-SLDN Executive Director Allyson Robinson said in a news release.

Fleming’s amendment would expand current “conscience protections” in the National Defense Authorization Act, which currently require the Pentagon to accommodate religious “beliefs.”

“Basically, you can believe what you believe and not be punished for it, but if your actions based on those beliefs are counter to the Uniform Code of Military Justice or counter to what’s necessary, that can be held against you,” Rep. Adam Smith (D-WA) explained last year, when the conscience protections were first added to the defense spending bill.

But Fleming’s amendment would require the Pentagon to accommodate religious “speech and actions” — not just beliefs.

Think what you like, but don’t expect your beliefs to cover your ass when you act like a criminal.

But Christians are the ones being persecuted.

30 thecommodore  Wed, Jun 5, 2013 7:16:11pm

Robert Spencer’s response:

jihadwatch.org

The Tennessean report, like Bill Killian and Kenneth Moore, completely ignores the genuine concern that people have about jihad and Islamic supremacist activity, and the fact that Muslim groups (aided and abetted by Obama) use claims of “hate” and “bigotry” to shut down honest discussion of how jihadists use the texts and teachings of Islam to justify violence and supremacism. Killian and Moore expatiated at length about how “inflammatory” speech could violate civil rights laws, and how Arab and Muslim children were being taunted in school, and how Tennesseans should be more welcoming, etc. But no one was there to defend the taunting of Muslim or Arab schoolchildren. No one was there because he hated foreigners. People were there because they know that truthful and accurate exploration of Islam’s violent teachings has been deemed “inflammatory” by both Muslim groups and the Obama regime — and that leaves us unable to examine the motives and goals of jihad terrorists, or to defend ourselves adequately against them. That’s why everyone was so upset with Killian and Moore, but they were either oblivious to that fact or intent on ignoring it.

And Pamela Geller’s questions are apposite: “The enemedia supporting the suppression and restriction of free speech in America presents an interesting paradox. Are they so clueless or self-important that they think they will be spared? Didn’t the Obama administration spying on the AP and other news organizations teach them anything?” Good questions for Nicole Young to ponder.

And eventually you end up with a group of people who are completely batshit crazy off the rails on the crazy train and they still think the answer is to turn it up a notch.

To the best of my knowledge, no.

I use it in the sense of “authoritarian nationalism” generally, and in its specifics in the manner described by Umberto Eco.

Try watching a lets play of it sometime, I would be interested in hearing your thoguhts on the messages present in the game though I find it sort of toothless when it comes to its political commentary though since it features a bunch of deeply religious racist secessionists who worship the founding fathers and who are lead by a northern Neo-confederate (who would have been all of 11 when the civil war ended) in a society that is strangely progressive on sexual issues…it mixes and matches too many different things to come across as an effective parody/warning/deconstruction of what America could be.

Well, in fairness it is set in 1912, when many of those issues existed in a different form than they do now. At that time, the Civil War was still very much within living memory.

I wonder if the date is also a swipe at Walt Disney, who set a good number of movies in the years immediately preceding World War I.

But if they set it in that time period, why not have the villains be mysgonist pigs, instiltutionalized mysgoiny is a problem that America is still grappling with today it was even worse back in 1912 and should in theory be even worse than that among people who like the Columbians who are so close minded. If you think about it, it’s not that absurd. You’re talking about a city with a limited population, which means everybody pulling their weight. Except the “everybody pulling their weight” thing is not born out by what we see in the larger context of the game.

If there was so much work to be done that women had to get involved doing it like in WW2 then you would not see people in Finkton having to attack each other over the chance for having ANY kind of job to do.

One thing you have to also take into consideration is that Columbia has been, for better or worse, culturally isolated from the mainland US for a decade by the time Booker shows up. The argument could be made that societies can’t change all that much in a decade, but stop and consider how far the US has changed since 2002. For example, in 2002 the idea that the US would be a supreme court case away from legalizing gay marriage, that homosexuals could serve openly in the military, or that we’d have a black president might have seemed unreal.

But what is the impetus that is causing Columbia to become shockingly liberal on the issue of women in the work force to the point that they are allowing women to serve as police officers?

Yes I know Comstock is grooming his daughter to take over for him, but it is not as if women have not ever managed to rule effectively in extremely mysogistic based societies before so I do not get why Columbia should be liberal on this issue? It’s worse than a lottery. It’s basically health care by call-in contest:

Tennessee Race for Medicaid: Dial Fast and Try, Try Again

NASHVILLE — Two nights a year, Tennessee holds a health care lottery of sorts, giving the medically desperate a chance to get help.

.State residents who have high medical bills but would not normally qualify for Medicaid, the government health care program for the poor, can call a state phone line and request an application. But the window is tight — the line shuts down after 2,500 calls, typically within an hour — and the demand is so high that it is difficult to get through.

There are other hurdles, too. Applicants have to be elderly, blind, disabled or the “caretaker relative” of a child who qualifies for Medicaid, known here as TennCare. Their medical debt has to be high enough that if they paid it, their income would fall below a certain threshold. Not many people end up qualifying, but that does not stop thousands from trying.

Modern conservatism in action. Throw a few scraps to the poor and desperate and let the rest go fuck themselves.

If the founders are suppose to be a mockery of what the dominist aspect of the Conservative party would be like if they got control, it would work much better if they were openly misoginistic and Comstock was a president one who can run for as many terms as he wants since this is before FDR) with a rubber stamping cabinet /congress and judges who vote his way, since it would line up with the way that they are passing laws that make it harder for people they do not like to vote rather than simply having him be a tyrant.

Honestly I feel that small little changes like that would actually be MORE likely to make people think. Instead of the lesson being “religious dictators are bad” (hold onto your seats folks its not like we’ve ever seen any proof of that either in Bioshock 2 or in real life!) it could serve as a dramatic warning about the dangers of a democracy being transformed into a one party state where simply having votes and elected officials no longer guarantees anthig like a fair or just society.

Yet it’s not a little change. With such rampant misogyny, you’d have to explain story elements like how a woman, even one so obviously brilliant as Rosalind Leutece, could be so accepted that they’d put up a statue in her honor. Or how Columbia would begin to accept a woman, even if she was Comstock’s heir, as the future ruler of Columbia. Not to mention that you’d have a hard time explaining the religious worship of Lady Comstock or Columbia instead of Uncle Sam in such a society.

My counter point is Queen Victoria as an example of a woman who ran a nation that had a noticeable misoginistic bent at the time. Also as Elizabeth is a mirical child she is above the standard rules on gender. Lady Comstock can be venerated as being the perfect woman for how she sacrificed for her husband without ever needing to have her “leave the kitchen” so to speak. Have Robert instead of Rosalind be the Leutece who is native to the Columbia universe and as for worshiping Columbia, rember it is the angel Columbia and angels are once again above the standard rules on gender that humans have.

Not to paint with too broad a brush, but the cultural impulses that motivate the crowd here are quite similar to the ones that motivate the reactionaries who populate the tea party.

The townhall forum is great in theory. But whoever thought this town hall forum would work should have looked at two things: first, the townhalls from 2009-2010 when similar groups of old, white conservative, largely southern “patriots” freaked out over the mere attempt to expand health care in the US.

Second, the specific history of Tenn. in recent years. It’s been a hotbed of anti-Muslim activity. Everything from vandalism of mosques, to blatantly unconstitutional state and local legislation preventing construction of Muslim community centers, to the obligatory abolition of something that doesn’t exist—sharia courts of law. For a variety of reasons, Tenn. is in the vanguard of the xenophobic response to American Muslims. A very dubious distinction.

And I find their way to be rather disjointed and milquetoast compared to what they could have accomplished. Though I suppose the more they erred towards making Coumbia a dark mirror of Anerica or at least aspects of America (say by making it noticeably misoginistic as well) the more likely they would be to hit “too close to home” for some people.

But it falls flat on its face or at least fails to hit home, because what makes American Eceptionaism scary is the way that it warps the world around it on a global scale (like the invasion of Iraq) whereas Columbia is more or less a generic doomsday villain of a nation that wants to wipe out all other nations because they are sinful.

True, but that aspect would be far more complex to simulate and would have exposed the game’s makers to far more hostile commentary. Many of those right-of-center, likely including me, would have treated the game as an example of ‘Blaming America First’ and dismissed it accordingly.

Moreover, there is again the matter of time setting. America was not a superpower back in 1912. Germany and the UK had larger navies than we did and many European nations had larger armies. The US could not be depicted as that kind of giant in 1912, even through the plot device of Columbia.

Yet that’s just one aspect of American exceptionalism, one that is played out in the prophecies of Columbia burning “the Sodom below.” Other aspects show up pretty clearly, such as the idea that America is unique and thus better than other nations, to the point that Columbia actually believes itself superior to America. There’s the fanatical worship of the Founders, who are viewed as having given America gifts that no other nation has received.

I agree it is almost impossible to properly stimulate that sort of issue and it would be whole hartedly unhistorical to depict it in a 1912 setting.

Which I suppose brings me back around to my original complaint/request, the Founders should have maintained/played up the mysgony of the time period. It would feel more accurate to the setting and also make them a more accurate commentary without inviting undue backlash as I don’t think there are many people out there who defend mysgony other than obviously its practitioners.

I guess the problem for me is that any aspects /traces of American exceptionalism I personally have are tied into the fact that we were one of the englightenment period’s first major democratic countries which managed to operate democratic/republican style of government on a huge scale and actually managed to make it work despite having parts of the country that effectively hated other parts of the county’s guts.

Thus the complacency with which Columbia has abandoned any pretext at democracy divorces it from being an accurate depiction of the horrors of MY vision of American Exceptionalism.

Which I suppose/admit is more a problem with 2k / irrational not reading my mind/catering directly to me than the final product I general.

No damage here at my house but a lot of debris, leaves, shingles, etc. blowing around.

True, but that doesn’t mean anything politically, because it gives both parties what they want:

The Democrats get to retain the inside track on the vacated Senate seat.

The Republicans keep Corey Booker off of the same ticket as Chris Christie. Christie also does not have to worry about being on the same ballot as a Tea Party wackadoo, which has happened a few times in recent elections.

Thus the offices held by the respective parties are more secure. And in that the decision accomplishes its intended purpose of incumbent protection.

That would lessen its appeal in the US, by a lot. America mostly wants to hear about itself, a game whose topic is a foreign nation would not appeal to many here.

Yet how does one really abandon something that they didn’t have in the first place? Comstock never stood for election, he was essentially appointed to his position by virtue of being the mastermind behind Columbia’s creation. And there’s no indication that there was ever an election in the city’s history or any sort of government besides Comstock. And he’s established a cult of personality that’s kept him in power by virtue of being “Our Prophet.” If anything, they probably feel hostility towards the idea of democracy on account of the US gov’t ordering them to stand down in the aftermath of the Battle of Peking.

Bioshock is by this point a 2/3 game series whose products tend to be seen as the best game of whatever year they come out. If the American market for Bioshock games can survive Bioshock Infinite a game with some of America’s sacred cows squarely in its crosshairs, then the brand will not be significantly weakened by having games that have next to nothing to do with America, after all Bioshock 1 and 2 had nothing to do with America or any identifiable country and yet that hurt their sales not a bit that I could see,

The US already got its tail tweaked by Bioshock Infinite, if the next game is associated with any country (as opposed to not being like the first one was) it should be some other country, we have already seen the stereotypical French Revolutionary problems in Bioshock Infinite as well this is why I suggest British Colonialism instead.

When you distill down the entire series you’re pretty much left with the conflict between those in power and those being exploited. Given the time frame there’s nothing particularly american about tossing in misogyny, since that was endemic in virtually every other country and culture, and in many cases still is (I’m looking at you Japan.)

Every Bioshock game seems to examine class conflict through one primary theme, objectivism in one, communism / utopian totalitarianism in two, and racial / religious conservatism in infinite. I think you’re looking at a lot of examples of American jingoism in infinite and thinking there should be more of a generalized critique of America per se going on, when each game has only really ever been about a facet of modern inequality. Bearing this in mind, if the game is going to borrow from the american experience it makes more sense to focus on race, since as an immigrant nation that fought a civil war over racial equality our identity is kind of intrinsically wrapped up in that struggle.

I am not sure how much 2 really inspects a class struggle as to me it seems to be more about parenthood and what makes a good parent / a bad one (or all the “hilarious” ways that Sophia Lamb can assume a parental role for someone and then screw their lives over) but one the other hand 2 was not add by Irrational Games so if it seems the odd game out in the series (also no lighthouse) that is somewhat to be expected and you have certainly given me a lot to think about.

There are quite a few references to communistic themes in the character of Sophia Lamb. She created an artists commune, gave away money and free counseling before being imprisoned by Ryan. There was also her father’s influential idea of the “triage principle” which was defined as a kind of 40K Tauish “common good.” Then there’s her goal of transferring the memories of all the inhabitants of rapture into a single, ideal, avatar - taking communism to it’s most extreme, ridiculous conclusion. There are also references to her having anybody attempting to leave Rapture killed, which is more totalitarian than communist per se, but then totalitarianism is another underlying theme through the series, inasmuch as each tyrant at the center of their cult of personality tends to wrap their totalitarian policies in the ideology du jure.

Everyone by now has heard about the Springboro, Ohio school board and their fascination with creationism. And today was another meeting that was covered in the news and on various blogs so the topic is hardly new, but there are aspects of this story which aren’t being stressed enough, I think.

Creationism stays on Springboro agenda

Springboro’s debate over introducing creationism into local classrooms will continue.

Despite a series of calls Tuesday to end the idea, the board left up for future discussion at board meetings a proposed policy change including creationism in a list of controversial issues that would be appropriate for school discussion.

“I want to allow that discussion to happen,” Board President Kelly Kohls said. “We’re going to leave it on first reading for quite a while.”

Before leaving it as a discussion item, the board heard more critical comments from parents, teachers and other residents.

[…]

In 2011, Kohls suggested creationism be added as supplemental curriculum in the district, sparking protests at the local level and from the ACLU and the Freedom from Religion Foundation. Earlier this year the board’s policy committee included creationism in a list of controversial topics also including evolution, legalization of drugs, pro-life/abortion, contraception/abstinence, gun rights, global warming, climate change and sustainable development.

The board also was criticized for a proposed policy change that calls for inclusion of materials from groups — seen as religious by opponents – during Constitution Day activities. One of the groups, the National Center for Constitutional Studies, advocates a “preferred status” for religion among American civil rights.

[…]

Also Tuesday, an email newsletter from the Warren County Tea Party urged supporters to write letters to the Springboro district supporting the controversial issues policy change.

“Will you stand up for our children by telling education it is right to teach students that man-made global warming, evolution and many other topics are controversial, and there are at least two sides, and they must question the resources,” the newsletter said. Kohls also heads the local tea party.

So, the school board president is also a tea party leader.

And, the “National Center for Constitutional Studies” is a religious group. It was founded by none other than… Cleon Skousen, Glenn Beck’s idol (and former instructor of Mitt Romney.)

What a dingbat. Anyone who looks at these issues for more than two seconds can easily see the following:

1) Risk of a theocratic Islamist takeover in the US: 0%.

2) Risk of a theocratic Christian takeover in the US: very small, but not zero.

3) Risk of outcome #2 significantly increased by morons freaking out about the impossible #1.

If those people are reacting to Islam as they are now, just imagine what the “dialogue” is going to sound like if there is another successful major Islamist terror attack in this country…

“After the September 2001 terrorist attacks, the Bush administration began a secret NSA program for the bulk collection of Americans’ call records as part of a broader counterterrorism effort that included the wiretapping of Americans’ international phone communications with suspected terrorists without a warrant. The latter effort was put under secret court supervision in 2007. But until now, there had been no evidence that the call records program, whose disclosure by USA Today in 2006 created an uproar, continued under the Obama administration.”

[…]

Who helped the journalists obtain that “top secret” court order?

Hopefully, that’s going to stay secret for a long time. As Charlie Savage and Edward Wyatt note in the NY Times, “The order was marked TOP SECRET//SI//NOFORN, referring to communications-related intelligence information that may not be released to noncitizens. That would make it among the most closely held secrets in the federal government, and its disclosure comes amid a furor over the Obama administration’s aggressive tactics in its investigations of leaks.” In other words, it was likely leaked by someone who took a personal risk exposing it.

Why?

It is impossible to know. But it isn’t hard to identify likely motives. Perhaps the leaker felt morally repulsed by the knowledge that the government is spying on millions of innocent citizens in secret, something normally associated with Communist and fascist regimes, not democratic republics. (It’s true that the order doesn’t cover the content of calls, and that a separate warrant is needed to connect the information to actual users — not that we’d know if they sought those, or if officials now or in the future just ignored that legal requirement to spy on individuals. One wonders what Richard Nixon would’ve done with access to all that information.)

[…]

I’ve not followed this story closely, but I’ve been under the impression that this court order was just following what the (presumed Constitutional) law directed.

The gang may not like the law, but if the Obama administration follows it does that make him like Nixon?

CHINA BEAR BILE COMPANY QUITS IPO BID AFTER OUTCRY

Animal-rights activists in China are claiming a rare victory after a company that raises bears to extract bile from their gall bladders withdrew its application for a public listing.

The plan for an initial public offering by Fujian Guizhentang Pharmaceutical had caused outrage on social media and sparked online petitions from activists who say extracting bile from live bears is cruel.

[…]

Last week, the China Securities Regulatory Commission listed Guizhentang as one of 269 companies that had withdrawn its application for an IPO this year.

When called for comment Thursday, the company repeatedly hung up.

With all the hubbub in TV-land over Matt Smith making good on his previous threat to leave Dr. Who there is rampant speculation on who next will play the character, but the following has picked up steam:

Should the next Doctor Who be a woman?

Personally two things come to mind:
(1) Remember that the original brief for the series was to be a children’s show. It was not primarily intended for adults, though a great deal of the 10th doctor’s programs seemed to be aiming at an older audience. Then the Smith version of the Doctor included some episodes that appeared to appeal again to a slightly younger audience.
(2) I’d rather see the series rest again. At least 5 years, maybe 10. The current run was enhanced, I propose, by the long wait from the last of the campy set well over a decade ago was allowed to fade from memory. A long rest would allow a totally new reboot (like what BBC did in 2005) for a new senior producer to take it in a new direction.

228 freetoken  Thu, Jun 6, 2013 2:25:02am

Having said that, I suspect BBC Worldwide makes too much money in international syndication for them to rest the program. Dr. Who, along with DWTS, are the shows that they can market around the world to get cash flow back into the UK parent company.

Sadly yes. There was a big stink in China after a video showing someone sticking a bear with a long needle to extract the bile went viral. Needless to say, the bear did not enjoy the procedure, which was performed without anesthetic.

Chinese folk medicine, which Mao popularized decades ago as a worthy alternative to Western medicine, calls for such exotic ingredients as bear bile and pulverized rhino tusks. In the West, we call it “Traditional Chinese Medicine” (TCM). Others may call it “woo-woo” medicine.

I don’t think the Doctor needs a rest… but Moffat does.

I loved Amy and Rory, River was an interesting concept, but they did start to run thin by the last few of their run. And Clara isn’t really working for me. Maybe it’s because Moffat is splitting his attention with Sherlock, or maybe 3 years used up all his good ideas with room left over. Even Gaiman’s second episode wasn’t great. Surely there’s a long list of Britain’s Most Talented who are eager to take the helm for a couple of seasons?

China had a mass death on a poultry farm.

news.yahoo.com

A swift-moving fire trapped panicked workers inside a poultry slaughterhouse in northeastern China that had only a single open exit, killing at least 119 people in one of the country’s worst industrial disasters in years.

Survivors described workers, mostly women, struggling through smoke and flames to reach doors that turned out to be locked or blocked.

243 A Mom Anon  Thu, Jun 6, 2013 4:43:20am

So this happened:

My son came to me last night with something that’s been bothering him for a long time. It seems that for almost every single day at school for six years he was called some variation of the word “retard”. I knew it had happened to him a couple of times, but I had no idea it was happening in almost every classroom, in the halls, on the bus. Fucktard, Retard, Asstard, Fagtard.

I’m just as guilty of the next person, especially with the word fucktard (I don’t use retard, being the parent of a child with a developmental disability kind of cured me of that). After seeing the hurt on my son’s face and the pain in his eyes when telling me this, I can’t say anything close to that anymore. My son told me that when he told one person he was autistic they retorted with “I knew you were a retard”. This was someone who he thought was a friend, that person spread it all over the school and it became another tool for bullying and exclusion.

I’m not the PC police, but language does hurt and is often used as part of a set of tools to exclude and cause pain to others. If we’re going to be inclusive and caring humans, we need to know these things so we can help people figure out how to cope and how to move past the damage that bullies cause with their words and actions. I’m passing this along because there are many autistic people all around us every day who carry the scars of bullies and may lack the tools to cope. It leads to depression, in some cases suicide. It erodes confidence and robs people of self worth. Not just the words, but the connotation of those words.

YMMV of course, this is only one family’s experience. Now I have to figure out how to help my young adult son heal those wounds so he can rebuild the confidence and love of self he once had.

I just bought this Electrolux Magic Mill bread mixer.

It came down to this one, or the KitchenAid 7-quart Commercial Stand Mixer.

I had a hard time deciding which one. They are both the same price. What finally tipped me to buy the Electrolux:

1. My daughter has one and she loves it.
2. It has the highest reviews on all consumer baking sites.
3. It has a small footprint.
4. The KitchenAid is just too large and too heavy for home use.

Factors that I had to overcome before making the decision:

1. Service is hard to obtain for this European product, unlike the KitchenAid service center which is right here in Dearborn.
2. The KitchenAid is offered by Amazon Prime (but the Electrolux still has free shipping)
3. There is a learning curve involved to using this mixer, which operates differently from the KitchenAid that I’m used to.

This one from the article was bizarre: Meanwhile, in the last few years, a foam-like “gray bubbly substance” has appeared on top of hog manure in factory size hog farms, reports Mother Jones and has caused at least six explosions and a fire that took many animals’ lives. Scientists cannot explain the foam, which grows to a thickness of up to four feet and pulsates with apparent microbial activity. It sounds like something that would be grown in a test tube—except that the test tube is the size of a factory farm.

Christianity traditionally has regarded women as vessels—vessels for evil, and for babies. For Adam was formed first, then Eve. And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. But women will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety (1 Timothy 2: 13-15). As a consequence, Catholic rules addressing reproduction are particularly convoluted, and sometimes patients pay the price:

The NWS office in Tallahassee, which typically has 18 meteorologists on staff, is down to 14 due to the cuts.”

So, to reiterate: A hurricane just killed nearly 150 people last year, in part because we were inadequately prepared. Now, we are getting clear warning that the upcoming hurricane season, which started last Saturday, may give rise to as many as 13-20 tropical storms, and 11 of those may turn into hurricanes. Three to six of those may be major, Sandy-sized monsters. And we just fired 23% of the staff of the public agency we’re relying on to cope with it.

The first named storm of the year is already churning away in the Gulf, and now packs winds of 60mph. It’s expected to dump significant rains as it makes its way up the East Coast, and the NYC metro is expecting 2-4 inches of rain, with localized heavier amounts. Coastal flooding and river flooding is possible.

Oh, and because of sequestration, the folks who monitor and maintain the flood gauges have reduced staffing.

But remember - the GOP thinks this is a good thing. Reduce the size of government, and no one will miss a thing.

Except when the warnings don’t come in time and the GOP complains that government isn’t doing its job. The reason that we aren’t getting as good predictions as we should is that we’re not funding things the way that is necessary to maintain and upgrade the systems to make those predictions, as well as fund the staffing levels to a point that allows better predictions to be made.

Israeli tanks move to Golan Heights’ border

(CNN) — Israeli tanks moved Thursday to the border on the Israeli-occupied side of the Golan Heights.

The move came after the Syrian army recaptured Quneitra crossing, Syria’s only crossing to the Golan Heights.

A few hours earlier, an opposition group said Syrian rebels had seized the crossing from Syrian forces.

After the army retook control, clashes continued at a lower intensity.

How many of the people complaining are using facebook or twitter, or any other social media site - the amount of data and information being shared (knowingly or unwittingly) is far more vast (and far less secure to predators and the companies themselves using the data for their own purposes) than what the NSA is collecting from the phone calls - the claim is that the NSA is getting metadata on calls - location information of the source and destination, duration, etc. - not actual content of the calls.

They’re doing it with the WoT, including Rumsfeld’s asinine statements about whether Obama is helping out AQ with his policy (even as Obama’s Administration greenlit UAV strikes at a tremendous pace to wipe out AQ #2s, and killed OBL in a daring raid into Pakistan).

Because Obama. That’s why. Doesn’t matter that he’s following existing law.

Because Obama.

Same thing with the whole nontroversy over the girl seeking a lung transplant. RWNJs say it’s proof of Obamacare and Death Panels. Even though it’s a UNOS policy in place for more than a decade, and has proven to save lives and reduce waiting times on transplant lists - and that the reason we even have this problem is because there are too few donors and too many people in need. People are dying all the time on the transplant lists, but this is somehow proof of Obama being bad/evil/worse than the Devil.

Because Obama.

That’s why.

Here in Texas, liquor stores close at 9pm Monday-Saturday, stay closed on Sundays, and you can’t buy beer or wine before noon on Sundays, so you’d best stock up for NFL Sunday on Saturday.

Also, if you want to buy a car on the weekend, make sure you know which day the dealership is open, since they can only be open on either Saturday OR Sunday, but not both.

He’s calling for a flat tax, and shifting the tax collection to the states, decentralizing the tax collection.

It means even higher costs for taxpayers, despite his claims. Most taxpayers would see higher taxes, except those in the highest tax brackets, who would see tax rates decline. Flat taxes have a way of doing that.

Simplification doesn’t have to result in a less progressive tax bracket collection system. It can mean lower tax rates by eliminating certain deductions, exemptions, or credits.

For instance, eliminate the AMT and require that all people making over X (as adjusted for inflation) must pay a flat tax of Y%, instead of having to do the calculations they do now - itemizing income, figuring out credits and their phase outs, etc.

I keep seeing posts/twitters about how everyone hates Obamacare according to new polls.

Umm… do these polls break out specifics about what Obamacare is, or do they simply ask whether they know it exists and whether they like it.

Because if people actually knew what comprises Obamacare, those answers might change.

Obamacare includes eliminating provisions for preexisting medical conditions.
Obamacare allows people to stay on parents’ insurance to age 26.

Those two aspects required by the law help millions of people get insurance - and keep it.

The GOP has done an amazing job of obfuscating what Obamacare is and what it hopes to accomplish. It’s not without its problems, but the GOP doesn’t want to fix Obamacare, it wants to destroy it. Democrats who might want to see aspects fixed can’t criticize because it undermines the ability to sustain the program, even though there are things that ought to be fixed, modified, or improved.

It’s GOP slash/burn, and they don’t care about proposing new policies or improving existing ones. It’s about destroying Obama.

There’s a reason they uniformly refer to it as “Obamacare” and not “The Affordable Care Act”, which is the legislation’s actual name.

“Obama” shortcuts the audience straight to “Obama = Bad, therefore Obamacare = bad” without any thought or analysis involved.

Basic Rhetoric 101.

As I said in a thread a few days ago, I wanted to break things when Erick, Son of Erick tried to tell me how horrible it was that “Obamacare” would be creating a “two-tier medical system where only the rich get good healthcare”; this after I had to help my mother pay for eye surgery because it was demanded that she pay six grand out of pocket — as if everyone just has 6 g’s just lying around for a rainy day.

I wish I could say this was parody, but we’re talking about David Horowitz’ rag here, so of course it’s completely serious.

Being in the bicycle business, of course I’ve heard of Janette Sadik-Khan. But I had no idea she was a jihadist.

Bicycles are one of the obsessions of Mayor Bloomberg and his transportation secretary Janette Sadik-Khan. Khan is the granddaughter of Imam Alimjan Idris, a Nazi collaborator and principle teacher at an SS school for Imams under Hitler’s Mufti, Haj Amin al-Husseini. The bio of his son, Wall Street executive Orhan Sadik-Khan, frequently mentions the bombing of the family home in Dresden and surviving trying times after World War II. It neglects to mention that the times were only trying because their side was losing.

In 1933, Idris wrote a letter asking why Allah would have chosen the Jews, whom he described as, “the most despicable, repulsive and corrupting nation on earth.” It’s hard to say what Imam Idris would have made of his granddaughter marrying a Jewish law professor and peddling bikes that no one wants from a nearly bankrupt Montreal government company.

But considering that Imam Idris was at times accused of being a Soviet agent and did some work for Imperial Japan, it seems likely that he would have understood.

In partial revenge, Khan has made many New York streets nearly as impassable as those of her grandfather’s wartime Dresden. Bike lanes have turned two lane streets into one lane streets. Infidels sit in their cars and honk while bike lanes go unused and midtown bus lanes sit empty except for the occasional daring taxi driver braving the bus lane camera and the 150 dollar fine.

If only Daniel Greenfield had worked Benghazi in there somehow, it could have been parody. It’s still the freakiest thing I’ve read this week.

Meanwhile:

For those not in the know, the TARDIS (which stands for Time And Relative Dimension In Space) is the flying time machine of the Doctor Who series. It also resembles a 1960s police phone box.

It can travel through time, is bigger on the inside, and until now it has never left the earth’s atmosphere. (Well, at least not in real life).

Well now a production company called 3 Stags has started a campaign to launch a TARDIS into space to celebrate the series’ 50th anniversary.

The group has already built a TARDIS satellite out of light weight aluminium. The light on the top of the box is powered by solar panels.
The team has also equipped the blue box with a GoPro camera to record its flight from earth. It also contains a hard drive ready to be installed with information.

Now this is a worthwhile and legitimate endeavor.

Why would you even use cars in NYC? For me, I would use literally anything else before I used a car.

There are parts of the City - Staten Island, Queens and Brooklyn especially, that are poorly served by subways, and bus routes aren’t particularly good/convenient.

And the cost is prohibitive to build out new subways to those areas - the 2d Ave subway, which is essentially replacing an elevated line that was demolished in the 1940s, is costing billions for just the first segment.

So, if you live in say Staten Island and want to get to Queens for a Mets game, it’s perceived as being easier to drive by car than to take bus to ferry and then subways to the game.

Sure. That’s just reality. It still doesn’t negate the fact that the Patriot Act was vague and broadly defined in a lot of ways. And even then, I’d hardly attribute it to technocratic liberals in the mold of Michael Bloomberg turning Detroit into what it is. I’m hardly a scholar on Detroit, but I imagine it’s a toxic brew of crony local politics, de facto segregation and redlining, and above all, the fall of the American automakers as their market share eroded with stiff competition from Japanese carmakers.

If anything needs to be blamed for Detroit above all, it’s poor business decisions and a lack of foresight by those running GM, Chrysler, and Ford that led to the collapse of the industrial employment and tax base there.

Bill justifies profiling of muslims based on ‘14,000 acts of terror’ out of the… how many billions of practicing muslims in the world, but having a national gun registry would be ABSOLUTELY UNACCEPTABLE despite there being around 30,000 shooting deaths annually out of a pool of millions of gun owners.

If what I’ve read about her over the years is true, she’s a multi-millionaire, so it’s not like she needs the money. Why not take the kids on vacations and enjoy life? With that kind of dough she could do anything and she chooses this crap.

You would subject them to that dystopian nightmare?

5 Horrifying Details Hidden in Classic Children’s Cartoons

Sorry to break the news to you, kiddos, but even on the whimsical Island of Sodor, there’s no such thing as choo-choo heaven. As seen in Stepney the “Bluebell” Engine, when a train in the Thomas universe gets old and worn out, it goes here:

That’s the scrapyard, and as you can probably guess by the looks of utter dismay on those trains’ faces (and also the fact that there’s a dude getting ready to blowtorch one of them), the scrapyard is not a very pleasant place for a train to be. In fact, it’s precisely what it sounds like: a place where the best the trains can hope for is to ever so slowly rust away, while the worst they can hope for is to have all of their still-useful parts gradually cannibalized so that other trains may live a bit longer.

As someone who knows far more about trains than we ever care to noted, the train on the right in the picture above “seems to be a LNWR 0-8-2 tank engine with its trailing wheels, bunker, and back end of its cab already cut off.” We wonder, does a conscious train feel pain when you cut the back end of its cab off? So yeah, sending a train to the scrapyard is basically equivalent to sending Grandma away to the Meadow Springs Retirement Village and Organ Harvesting Clinic. And while that’s disturbing enough on its own, where this railroad really takes a switch toward Nightmareville is when you squint a little closer at the background of that picture:

Wooden building blocks.

I found these things called “Story Blocks” for my niece when she was 3 or so. They were uniform wooden blocks about 4”x2”x1” with a good finish. On each was a picture and some words (verbs or nouns). So besides building with them you could also assemble them to make sentences with pictures. About forty of them in the set and cost me about $40 fifteen years ago.

Not sure if she ever used them for that, but she at least played with the blocks and looked at the pictures. Also used to use the box they came in as a foundation to give Lego constructions higher elevation.

Short Google search did not turn them up though. :(

mysanantonio.com

During closing arguments Tuesday, Gilbert’s defense team conceded the shooting did occur but said the intent wasn’t to kill. Gilbert’s actions were justified, they argued, because he was trying to retrieve stolen property: the $150 he paid Frago. It became theft when she refused to have sex with him or give the money back, they said.

Gilbert testified earlier Tuesday that he had found Frago’s escort ad on Craigslist and believed sex was included in her $150 fee. But instead, Frago walked around his apartment and after about 20 minutes left, saying she had to give the money to her driver, he said.

That driver, the defense contended, was Frago’s pimp and her partner in the theft scheme.

He literally killed a woman over $150 and is not guilty of murder for it.

Sen. Rubio Wants To Amend The Constitution To Repeal Obamacare

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) proposed a constitutional amendment Tuesday that, if approved, would nullify Obamacare’s individual mandate. The amendment is the latest in a string of failed GOP attempts to repeal Obamacare, which many Republicans still view as unconstitutional.

The “Right to Refuse” amendment would make any laws that tax Americans who fail to purchase goods or services unconstitutional, targeting the Affordable Care Act’s stipulation that nearly all Americans must purchase health insurance. The amendment was introduced by Rep. Steven Palazzo (R-MS) in the House in February.
