True. Stassen was one of those now-extinct liberal Republicans. He was a credible candidate the first few times he ran for President, up to 1952. He stayed at it right up to 2000, just a year before his death at age 93. He was a butt of jokes for his persistence but in later years he was really doing it more as a voice of conscience than a serious candidate.
In his alternate history Colonization: Aftershocks Harry Turtledove has him actually serving as President in the ’60s.
