It doesn’t seem too difficult to avoid selling out while also avoiding pointless antagonism.

If a cop is accused of having Nazi paraphernalia, there is no need for the union guy to run to the media and pooh-pooh the significance of Nazi paraphernalia.

Similarly, if a teacher is accused of sexually abusing a child, there is no need for the union guy to try the credibility of the child in a media circus.
