I don’t know why cartoons of that sort are tolerated. They’re electoral poison and getting the votes of the people who will flounce if you move against them isn’t worth the votes from moderates that are lost. It’s just stupid.

To a sane, intelligent, level-headed conservative like yourself, who isn’t afraid to participate in a forum with alternative viewpoints and thus has a more “50,000 foot view” of the political landscape, you’re absolutely right.

To the more fanatical (and primary-voting) member of the party who has willfully and enthusiastically thrust themselves into the depths of the political echo chamber, the balance of the vote calculus may very well seem the opposite of your conclusion.
