You can thank the shutdown for that. The deadline was originally 1/21, but was pushed back due to the GOP shutdown; the IRS uses the October-December period to prepare for the next year’s tax filing season, updating rates, tables, and incorporating tax law changes as well as confirming e-filing compatibility.

That said, it makes sense for most people to hold off filing until after 1099s are mailed/received in February.

I thought companies had until 1/31 to mail those 1099s out; that’s always been the case as far as I know.
