Russia continues hammering away not at ISIL, but FSA and other rebel groups that are fighting not only Assad, but ISIL. Russia’s goals are to preserve Assad as a client state. That ISIL may occasionally come under bombardment by Russia is a side-effect of maintaining Assad in power.
