I’d quarrel with General Lee’s observation, in that we have at this point managed to refine war—from our side, at any rate—to the point where casualties are minimized to an incredible degree in comparison with other conflicts well within living memory, yet we have people who carry on over even those minimized casualties as if they were the death tolls from Antietam or the Somme.

These people who carry on are historical illiterates.
