Calling Stalin an Atheist is reductionist. When Stalin saw religion as a competitive political force he crushed it. When he saw it as a useful palliative during WWII, he promoted it.

Someone who uses a religion as a means to an end without any actual faithful tie to it is not suddenly religious as a result. Isn’t it in fact a statement that they do NOT believe in the religion at hand?
