The possible penalties the EU can impose for violating this incredibly complex law are huge. Nobody wants to get hit with a fine for several million euros, even if it comes from a country where they don’t really do business.

Maybe there’s a good reason for the GDPR, but after researching it in depth my considered opinion is that it’s a fuckin’ mess and a bad idea. And it won’t do a damned thing to stop spammers and criminals. It just penalizes everyone else.
