I do think the founders wanted separation of church and state not only for the good of the state, but also for the good of the church.

One’s faith is between that person and their God.

Heck, as a Christian I believe in free will. Which means that legislating “faith” actually goes against what God would want - someone freely choosing to live their life and follow Christ because they choose to, not because they are forced to.

The founders truly were giants. They knew then that religion and politics makes one heckuva unholy union (pardon the pun).

If I choose to believe in Christ, or nothing at all, it is MY BUSINESS. It is NOT the business of the state, and frankly I would be scared to death if it were.
