re: #288 Obdicut

I’m generally a ‘stick up for Mormons when they’re being unfairly bashed as compared to other Christians’ guy, but as I’ve started to look into this issue, all of the proclamations, etc. from the Mormon church I can find on this issue explicitly said that the reason they were stopping polygamy was to prevent the destruction of the church by the state, that mormons should obey the law of the land, but none of them said that it was revealed polygamy was actually wrong in any way.

For the average, lay Mormon, I think obviously polygamy is far away from anything they want or think about (more than they’re forced to by stereotyping). But in terms of actual theology, I can’t find any support for the idea that the Mormon church has changed it’s views on the rightnness of polygamy itself, just the rightness of doing it when it’s illegal.

I don’t think this is something horrible or even negative about the Mormon Church (though the practice of polygamy is rarely a good one, whatever the abstract of it may be) but it is, as far as I can tell, true.

And what I see is women as a type of property, a kind of “good use” item. It will take a bit for me to lose this mindset. I read under the banner of heaven.
