“the places where the border-making people got drunk and couldn’t draw straight lines” is actually… the places where the border-making people were pragmatic enough to say “that river there, that looks like a border to me”.

The closest to that is when the surveying party got lost in a storm in the mountains and Idaho wound up with a panhandle instead of being K-shaped.
