Talk about having contempt for your constituents. Coal miners could never enjoy opera. The children in a single parent household don’t need to know their colors when they start school.

Years ago, while living in the Great American Heartland, I helped out in my son’s kindergarten class. There was a boy who didn’t know the names of any of the colors. At first I thought maybe he was colorblind, but no. Apparently no one had ever asked if he wanted to wear the red shirt or the blue shirt, or mentioned a pretty yellow flower to him in the first 5 years of his life. The mind boggles.

Happens more often than you’d think. We actually had a kindergartner show up on the bus on the first day of school with no paperwork. When asked his name, he said “Sweetie.” That’s it. He had absolutely no idea what his name was!
