Upper Volta

coincidentally i did a report on upper volta as it was called then when i was in high school. the capital is Ouagadougou, which i pronounced “ow-a-ga-dow-gow” when presenting the report in front of the class. afterwards, the teacher came up to me and said, “uh, that’s a french spelling, which you are meant to pronounce “wa-ga-doo-goo”
