About as medieval as the words, maidenhead, dowry, the actual meaning of “wife” which originally meant simply “woman” and whose origin may have come from another root, meaning “shame” or “pudenda”.

Thank goodness we’re no longer property, although there are enough out there who want us to revert to that status.

And they make no distinction between the religious sacrament of Holy Matrimony and the legal status of marriage.

Churches can bestow or deny matrimony on anyond they wish, but the law is finally coming around to recognizing that it cannot deny the legal status of marriage based on race, religion or gender.
