All this talk unearthed a memory I had long forgotten. When I was around 12, my parents gave me a BB gun. I was out in our backyard shooting (our house lot had been carved into a hill, so there was no open area where a BB could have escaped) when a cop appeared on the lot next door (the next door neighbors were assholes and had called the cops on me).

Lucky for me, those were saner days, and of course I was white, so nothing happened. Playing with BB guns and fake guns was a part of growing up for me. Other than that one time, my friends and I were never bothered by anyone because of it. Of course, my friends weren’t black either.

Crazy thing is, the same folks who will excuse killing a 12 year old with a toy gun will wax nostalgic about when they were young and you could bring a rifle to school if you were going out hunting later, but these days Liberals won’t let you do that.
