Don’t forget that Sulu had been given command of the Excelsior prior to the beginning of ST VI: The Undiscovered Country and was as much of a kickass captain as Kirk during the course of the movie…

One of my favorite scenes from the movie is where Sulu is awakened by his comms officer (cameoed by Christian Slater), because Starfleet is asking if Excelsior knows the whereabouts of Enterprise. When Sulu tells his comms officer to tell Starfleet that they don’t know (even though he does and/or suspects that Spock and the Enterprise is planning a rescue mission for Kirk and McCoy) and the comms officer questions that response, Sulu growls at him, “You have hearing problems, mister?”, to which the comms officer said, “No, sir!” and left.

I always loved that.
