Well, I don’t see how what they say differs from the traditional Christian standard. You knowingly don’t believe in Jesus, you go to Hell is pretty much what it was all about all the time, no? Of course in the latter times many denominations became softer on the issue.

Yeah, it can be dizzying, but some are, let’s say, more strident than others. Still others try and sweep the issue (and of course the attendant history that goes with it) under the rug.

Wisconsin Evangelical Luthernan Synod makes even the Missouri Synod people cringe. Luther’s own anti-Semitism is pretty legendary. (Link to nasty document follows…click at own risk. bit.ly)

Point is, it’s something that Avrech and his ilk don’t want to get into — what these people they’re trying to impress really think about them. It’s not like they don’t already know.
