Anti-Abortion Ohio Rep. Busted for DWI, with Viagra and a 26-Year Old Woman

Republican Ohio State Rep. Robert Mecklenborg has been one of the biggest champions of the bizarre “heartbeat” bill, that would outlaw abortions as soon as the first heartbeat can be medically detected. Mecklenborg describes himself as a “Catholic boy from the west side of Cincinnati.”

This week we learned that two months ago, this anti-women’s rights “Catholic boy” was pulled over by an Indiana state trooper, found to be legally intoxicated, and charged with drunken driving. And that wasn’t all.

Mecklenborg also tested positive for Viagra, and had a passenger in the car — a 26-year old woman who was not his wife or daughter: An anti-abortion Ohio legislator’s embarrassing night out.

On Saturday, April 23 — in the wee hours of the morning after Good Friday — an Indiana state trooper pulled over Mecklenborg, who was driving in Dearborn County, with temporary Kentucky license plates. The officer stated in his report that he stopped Mecklenborg for a burned-out headlight, but then suspected he was intoxicated after he smelled alcohol and noticed the state rep’s “glossy, bloodshot eyes.”

Mecklenborg refused a chemical test, and then failed three field sobriety tests. After a blood test, he was charged with drunken driving. The 59-year-old married father of three also tested positive for Viagra.

Mecklenborg was not alone that evening. His passenger was a 26-year-old woman who is neither his wife nor one of his children.

In his incident report, the police officer noted that Mecklenborg’s inebriated state “endangered a person.” By “person,” we can assume he means a human life.

Mecklenborg, a Republican who represents western Hamilton County, pleaded not guilty. His court date is set for later this month.

He did not return my calls to his government or law offices, but he did offer an explanation, sort of, to WLWT-TV in Cincinnati on Thursday:

“Being human, I have made a mistake and this has caused great hurt to my family, and I’m deeply sorry for that. I’ve served tirelessly and well my constituents and I want to apologize to them as well. While the discovery process in this case goes on, I am entitled to the same presumption of innocence as any other citizen.”

When asked about his young passenger, Mecklenborg said, “I understand the interest in the DUI part, I guess, but the rest is a personal matter.”

UPDATE at 7/3/11 11:59:55 am

And the plot thickens; Mecklenborg was apparently holding an expired driver’s license, and the car may have belonged to the female passenger.

Here’s what we know for sure:

  • Mecklenborg has an Ohio drivers’ license (that appeared to have been expired at the time of his arrest.)
  • He was driving a vehicle with a temporary tag issued by the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
  • His passenger, Tiona Roberts, produced to the officer a Kentucky drivers’ license.

So, other than the fact that he was the driver, what evidence do we have that the car is Mecklenborg’s?  None.  So, if you take out that assumption that since he was driving it was his car it was his car, what does the available evidence point to?  That it was not his car, but likely Tiona Roberts.

UPDATE at 7/3/11 12:15:49 pm

There’s actually video of the traffic stop:

When asked about his young passenger, Mecklenborg said, "I understand the interest in the DUI part, I guess, but the rest is a personal matter."

A personal matter?

Perhaps this is Rep. Mecklenborg's eureka moment.

Pro-choice Americans have always argued that a woman's sex life is a personal matter, and that any decisions involving her body are her business. We understand only too well why Mecklenborg would rather we stop asking questions about his private life.

It's highly unlikely he had any kind of eureka moment with this. He's sorry he got caught, but it's just another story of assumed privilege, and his right do whatever he wants while trying to control other people.

re: #5 Charles

When you're arrested for DWI, you also get tested for drugs.

It's not realistic to test for all drugs, I would assume they would only test for drugs that effect perception or motor skills. Maybe Viagra does that, or amplifies other drugs...I don't know...

Ahh. You're a human. Well that's good to know.

How is it that so many male humans don't cheat on their wives or drive drunk? Maybe they're really extraterrestrials!

Not as good as when Anti-gay crusaders get caught with wide stances in public restrooms or with rentaboys, but (since then the hypocrisy is that much more obvious) none the less I trust that we can expect Rep Mecklenborg to be resigning any day now what with how he's clearly proven himself to be morally incapable of upholding the public's trust with this action....

///And maybe he and David Vitter can take the same jet back to their respective homestates after they resign to....

Not exactly. He refused a breathalyzer and failed a field sobriety test. Under Ohio law, the police/DA could ask for (and did) a blood test to determine BA levels.

Note to politicians, since you don't seem to get it: We serfs generally don't care what you do with your pecker, nor do we really care how drunk and/or or stoned you are while doing it. PRO TIP: That all goes out the window when there are questions about consent, and most especially if you've been a holier-than-thou moralizing Santorum smear your entire career.

I don't understand why a positive result for Viagra in a blood test would even be reported, in any official way, in the context of blood testing for a traffic stop --unless there is some sort of official consensus that it can reasonably be expected to impair driving, such as by interfering with steering.

I have to ask - why is the govt testing drunk drivers for Viagra?

Because the idiot refused the breathalyzer test and they had to resort to blood testing. When they blood test they are not only looking for alcohol but also for any other drugs that might impair you while driving. Marijuana, cocaine, Oxycontin, Hydrocodone, Heroin, etc, etc, etc...

Why Viagra would show up? Probably because it has become part of many standard drug panels that are designed to inform Doctors of possible complications when prescribing other drugs. (or maybe it is all really just a liberal conspiracy to smear him!)

There is apparently an interaction:

Viagra and Alcohol (Ethanol)
Moderate Drug Interaction
GENERALLY AVOID: Alcohol may potentiate the hypotensive effects of phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) inhibitors, and vice versa, as both are mild systemic vasodilators. In clinical pharmacology studies using tadalafil, more subjects administered alcohol at a dose of 0.7 g/kg (consumed within 10 minutes; equivalent to approximately 6 ounces of 80-proof vodka in an 80-kg male) in combination with tadalafil 10 or 20 mg single doses had clinically significant decreases in blood pressure than with alcohol alone. There were reports of postural dizziness, and orthostatic hypotension was observed in some.[Link: www.drugs.com...]

Several of you, and us included, had been wondering why Mecklenborg’s car had temporary Kentucky tags (it was a 2004 Lexus with a broken headlight.)

Perhaps, the reason the answer alluded us is that we assumed too much.

Here’s what we know for sure:

Mecklenborg has an Ohio drivers’ license (that appeared to have been expired at the time of his arrest.)
He was driving a vehicle with a temporary tag issued by the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
His passenger, Tiona Roberts, produced to the officer a Kentucky drivers’ license.
So, other than the fact that he was the driver, what evidence do we have that the car is Mecklenborg’s? None. So, if you take out that assumption that since he was driving it was his car it was his car, what does the available evidence point to? That it was not his car, but likely Tiona Roberts.

Which then begs the question: where did Mecklenborg leave his car he had to have driven to get to Indiana while driving the car he was arrested in?

Sorry, we were that slow on this one. Duh.

Which goes with my pet theory he was driving her car so she could service him.

Some of the Ohio Republicans arguments in favor of the heartbeat bill:

– Rep. Robert Mecklenborg: "The easiest way is also to look at it in the context of Nazi Germany, where during the 1920s, these were the arguments postulated by the proponents of abortion as the Third Reich was growing in power. Note they will sound very similar to you because they are exactly the same arguments put forth to support the current positions in support of the abortion laws as we have them on the books."

(So supporters of current abortion law = Nazis)

– Rep. Ron Young: I’m afraid in 1973, the Supreme Court took a different tact. [sic] If fetuses had been allowed to vote, if they had formed a voting block and they were organizing in front of the court house that day, the vote probably would have been much different.

And if people under 18 were allowed to vote the supreme court would probably have decided that it was illegal to ban the selling of violent video games to children a lot sooner. Also it would be legal for them to buy cigarettes, and you could drive as soon as you're feet were long enough to reach the pedals!

73 Tiny Alien Kitties are Watching You  Sun, Jul 3, 2011 12:15:50pm

In Florida you can refuse a breathalyser test but it means an automatic one year suspension of your license. If you need your license you are better off taking the test and allowing them to prove the DUI, if you can get along without it for a year then you should refuse. Refusing also means the saving of thousands of dollars as I learned by dealing with my Nephew, no probation fees, no periodic drug testing fees, no mandatory substance abuse classes, no additional fees from the DMV when applying to get your license back, no points on your license other than those associated with whatever violation caused you to be pulled over.

However, you lose the right to refuse if you are involved in an injury accident. If you, your passenger(s), the occupant(s) of another vehicle, or a pedestrian or bystander is injured in the slightest way whatsoever by your driving then the state can compel a bloodtest from you.

Seems like a fairly good compromise between personal rights and protecting society to me...

OMG You have to be kidding me!! Now I'm laughing. Almost as hard as Jaunte's rent-girl comment!

I'm starting to understand Ohio's corruption problem. Some folks were chatting about that on the other thread.

Is it corruption when you believe that corporations should dictate government policy, you ran on that belief, and now your delivering? Ohio has more of a stupid electorate problem the anything.

On the bright side, we had the first of what will be many meet ups for Obama 2012 at my house this past Wednesday. And there won't be a primary opponent. Heh.

Yeah I'm at the same point in the video. Is the idea meant to be that drunk people cannot help but move their head at the same time as their eyes?
Or that drunk people's eyes roll around a lot and dont stay still?

The second. Impaired people can not smoothly follow a finger as it moves in front of your face. Their eyes jerk around.

Double vision is easy to fix, just shut one eye and squint through the other, then you will be able to drive just fine!

S. Florida is woefully negligent in prosecuting DUIs if you're rich and affluent. There was a huge public outcry last year when a man, racing his Porsche down the beach boulevard ran off the road, onto the sidewalk killing two British businessman. Then took off. He had over 50 traffic/DUI violations and repeatedly paid off judges and lawyers so he never served a day.

He paid the families compensation and I think he got 10 years probation with a "promise not to drive anymore."

50 previous traffic infractions including hitting an officer and leaving the scene.

No arrests..

[Link: boingboing.net...]

After this case, many more were unearthed. Same deal, dozens of DUI charges with no consequences. All of wealthy men.

Yeah, doubtful since the Cincinnati paper has a reporter working that beat. Being in Indiana I suppose someone would have to have tipped off WLWT, who broke the story June 30, or someone at WLWT routinely goes over neighboring county police reports.

I knew he had many previous DUIs because I was following the issue on local TV talk shows, but I couldn't find one S. Florida article that mentioned it. I can't seem to locate the others, I think there were 5 or 6 total that they talked about at the time. Some had 20 DUIs, some had 30. It was just insane.

After LeVin was finally arrested and this all came out, the Broward County Traffic Magistrate very "mysteriously" left her post.

When I was a court clerk I knew the very last thing you should tell an arresting officer is "I am an attorney!" Number one: police officers don't have high favorabily ratings for attorneys. Number two: attorneys are officers of the court and their cases are usually high profile and messy. Number three: after the arrest the officer is usually going to call his/her favorite reporter to get the story out. Dumb move.

You do realize there's an entire index for LGF Pages, right? And you can easily see that you've had several Pages in the Featured list in the past few months.

[Link: littlegreenfootballs.com...]

If this is about your question on the "Clicks" counter -- I'm sorry, but it's just a fact that "Clicks" was not measuring anything meaningful. It was code that was rendered outdated by the changes in LGF Pages, and if you were counting on it to show you how popular your Pages were, it wasn't giving you that information in any real way.

Those counters were supposed to show the number of OUTGOING clicks, on links to external sites. In the original "spinoff links" design, there was only one link in the post -- the link to the external site. So at that point, the counters worked, to show you how many people had clicked on your link.

Now, the titles of your Pages are links to the individual page here at LGF -- NOT to the external link. For a while, I tried to change the "Clicks" counter to show the number of clicks on any links within the Page that went to external sites, but that's a meaningless statistic; someone could post a Page with no links at all, and it would show zero clicks, but that would have nothing to do with its real popularity.

I hope this explanation helps you see why this change was made. It wasn't to get you, or to make sure anyone's Pages get priority.

I always liked W's excuse:

"I'm not proud of that. I made some mistakes. I occasionally drank too much, and I did that night. I learned my lesson." Bush said he was not jailed after the arrest. "I told the guy (the arresting officer) I had been drinking, what do I need to do? He said, 'here's the fine.' I paid the fine."Bush said the timing of the initial news report, just days before Americans elect a new president, was "interesting." When asked where the story may have originated, he said, "I've got my suspicions."

and

2. Adding a link to the interview (which nobody disputes) where she called the United States a "terrorist state" [Link: www.foreignpolicy.com...] (BTW: This isn't the first time she's said this)

Probably not. We'll see him confess at a tearful press conference, with supportive wife and earnest clergyman in tow. He will explain that he has prayed with Mr. Earnest Preacher and renewed his commitment to Jesus and family, and possibly signed up for rehab. The clergyman will testify to the counseling and intercessory prayers and all will be well. Just once I would like to see the humiliated wife take out a frying pan and whack the alley-cat over the head just as he is tearing up and starting to deliver the scripted testimony about his newfound commitment. (I would not advocate this kind of violence, of course, but I sure would laugh about it.)

The story about Dominique Strauss- Kahn keeps getting creepier and creepier:

"She figured he's a rich dude, and she would get paid," said a source close to the defense investigation. "She was told by the crew she ran with that this was a gold mine."

The maid, who routinely traded sex for money with male guests, parked her cleaning cart outside Suite 2806 on the morning of May 14 and keyed her way into the room -- knowing what he looked like from a photo hanging in a maid closet that identified him as an important guest.

Multiple versions have emerged of what happened next, but nobody disputes that the 32-year-old maid performed oral sex on the Frenchman known as "the Great Seducer."

Sources now tell The Post that when the two were finished, the woman demanded cash from Strauss-Kahn -- but he refused to pay.

"There was an expectation of money after the fact, but he was dismissive," the source said.
And not gently, the source said -- DSK brushed off the maid's request as he turned his back and got dressed.
. . .
The humiliating exchange sparked the maid's anger, prosecutors suspect.

So - what was humiliating? That he wouldn't pay her? Not that she regularly used her access to hotel guests in order to exchange sex for money?

I don't dislike Bachmann because she raises foster kids. And a hell of a lot of liberals have done one or the other of these things. Avrech bitched about Hillary's pantsuits on his blog back during the election. I even commented about his complaints on MY blog. It's just partisan sexism. He thinks Hillary's outfits aren't feminine enough, and IIRC, told her that the reason no one trusted her was because she wore pants.

The story about Dominique Strauss- Kahn keeps getting creepier and creepier:

So - what was humiliating? That he wouldn't pay her? Not that she regularly used her access to hotel guests in order to exchange sex for money?

There's a scene in "The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress", where the narrator explains that the last time they got a rape case in his lunar city, a bunch of guys responded to to the woman's screams, and pushed the perp out an airlock. It later turned out she had been screaming because he refused to pay her, but that made no difference to the lynch mob--women are rare and valuable on the Moon.

But so much of the criticism is phrased in obscenity, as it that was probative.

The only reason I try to cut down on use of obscenities is that I have someone at home who asked me to. Otherwise, I think 'obscene' words have a place as emphasizers, and I think adults should be able to get past their use to see what might be probative in an argument.

Someone should ask, what's the difference between a Hillary-style pants suit and a Palin-style pants suit.

Palin wears skirts, and those patented red heels. This means she is a goooood girl, who, while being tough tough tough, shows that she remembers she's female, which is all about being attractive to men.

Seriously. That's how Avrech's mind works. The idea that maybe Sarah likes skirts, and Hillary prefers not to have to mess with them is simply beyond him. How a woman dresses is central to how he views her, and not choosing to be sexy is unforgivable.

Shoot, I don't know. I just keep seeing stories about DKS pop up almost everywhere, and they're all weird.

What's weirder (in my mind) - his wife leaves court with him and she's smiling.

I can guarantee you I wouldn't be smiling if the Roi acted the way this guy has acted - regardless whether the rape charge turns out to be true ( and it's looking more and more like it isn't) - the guy is a creep. So is the maid. Hell, those two seem to deserve each other.

I use less obscenity here just because the blog has changed. The language and environment was much rougher back when LGF was a "right wing blog". I usually try to reserve the more colorful language for later in the evenings. But in cases when the Republican party actually takes action in congress in an attempt to save terrorist regimes like Q'daffy's I feel it's it's perfectly acceptable to use "fuck" properly emphasize my disgust.

I think the reason she gets any flack at all over it is that it's become a standard brag for her that she 'raised' 23 foster children, (the implication being that she raised them for the usual 18 years minus-a-few) instead of saying she took them in for a limited time and was compensated by the state for her expenses. It was a good thing to do, but she's the one who's using it for political points.

True, but basically, I won't go there. I'm not going to attack the woman for taking in foster kids, or for bragging on it. It's a better brag than some.

Granted, she makes herself sound a bit like one of those amazing people you sometimes see in People Magazine, who adopt twelve disabled siblings and dedicate their lives to them, which I don't think is quite accurate, but it's politics. It's spin. I'm not rising to the bait. I'm going to count this as a mitzvah that she's done, unless given reason not to.

Part of it is, it IS bait, as Avrech's piece shows. They're just waiting and drooling, hoping someone will attack her about the foster kids, and this can turn into a food fight about how liberals hate people who help children.

Helmet Protester Dies from Head Injury

A biker was killed Saturday while protesting New York’s state law requiring helmet use. 55-year old Phillip A. Contos was riding with others in Upstate New York when he flipped over the handlebars of his 1983 Harley Davidson, striking his head on the pavement. The ride was organized by ABATE (American Bikers Aimed for Education), but the group is unsure if Contos was a member. Police report that, had he worn a helmet, he probably would have survived.

All of them still hung up on the Naughty Monkey pumps and tight outfits during the campaign (they did look smashing on her) have to ignore all the tomboyish sports and pantsuit pics or their brains will cave in from cognitive dissonance.

Bachmann may well be the type that never wears pants. I do happen to know that Oral Roberts University at the time she was there had a strict dress code of dresses/skrits for women, ties/short hair for men.

Personally, I could give a crud what she wears, I just find it hilarious that this is still an issue for conservatives like Avrech, in 2011.

For sure. Whew. It's hot. Must be around 120 in here. Got a fan going. Been drinking plenty of fluids and dressed for the weather. And it's still damn hot. That means 2 nights of loud boring "classic rock" (yawn) twice a week. Then add in the obnoxious chopper poser noise and the train noise and you might get the picture. Palin wears skirts, and those patented red heels. This means she is a goood girl, who, while being tough tough tough, shows that she remembers she's female, which is all about being attractive to men.

Seriously. That's how Avrech's mind works. The idea that maybe Sarah likes skirts, and Hillary prefers not to have to mess with them is simply beyond him. How a woman dresses is central to how he views her, and not choosing to be sexy is unforgivable.

I'll mention again the large number of dudes at the Value Voters summit who came up to Palin after her speech and openly leered, saying "Todd's a lucky man." They did this over and over again in the most greasy tones. I'm convinced that there's a huge group of conservative men who are just looking for any excuse to vote with their dicks, they see an attractive conservative airhead and their entire electoral thought process boils down to "pretty lady, wanna fuck."

Here at home, Obama got his Obamacare. Why, then, did he grant hundreds of exemptions — many to northern California liberals? Should they instead not have lined up to volunteer to implement such a wonderful, long-needed entitlement?

The reason so many exemptions were granted in SF, for example, is because the companies already were mandated, by SF law. Other municipalities likewise.

He almost certainly knows better and is lying for his cause. This is exactly the thing that woke me up. Yeah, I saw some people here claiming that, as well. It was baffling. I try to assume the best about people, especially people here, but when it's something that, as you say, literally takes ten seconds to research-- and is something extraordinarily unlikely to begin with-- it's hard to give much respect to that person's point of view.

And VDH is one of those. I didn't remember that mistake of his, I just opened up a random article of his and scanned it until I found a factual inaccuracy. I knew there'd be one.

The funniest thing about this is Meck being a lawyer, yet he kept answering police questions, and all he ended up doing was giving the cop more reason to arrest him.

Which is why you should never, ever, ever answer police questions.

He should have also known that all the field sobriety tests were completely voluntary. The only thing he is required to do is submit to a chemical test, and only after being arrested.

What a stooge!

And, of course, a hypocrite!

I can see why they might feel that way since Christianity is about Jesus. I'm not being snarky. We're just keeping busy while we wait. I don't think they see that though.

Christianity is about a lot of things, depending on who you ask.

WELS are types that can't even stand fellow Lutherans, let alone other Christians.

Other religions? Makes their head explode. They've got plenty to say about/against Jews and Judaism, though.

As for Ms. Bachmann, who knows what is going on in that box of rocks she calls a brain. So many of these people are just flat-out opportunists, it's hard to ascribe any motive to them at all, besides bilking and grifting.

re: #436 OhCrapIHaveACrushOnSarahPalin

Christianity is about a lot of things, depending on who you ask.

WELS are types that can't even stand fellow Lutherans, let alone other Christians.

Other religions? Makes their head explode. They've got plenty to say about/against Jews and Judaism, though.

As for Ms. Bachmann, who knows what is going on in that box of rocks she calls a brain. So many of these people are just flat-out opportunists, it's hard to ascribe any motive to them at all, besides bilking and grifting.

I've heard these kinds of things before so it's not surprising. I've also been told that since I'm Jewish, I'm already saved. So em... there's a relief!

Of course, whatever Bachmann's religion is, it doesn't belong in politics. My problem, of course, is that she sees no separation of church and state. Otherwise, she could worship a bucket of dirt for all I really care. Unless, you know, she's a secret Nazi or maybe a Satanist like Christine O'Donnell.

I said a clique, a claque, the cliquey, the claquey
To the clique clique claque, a you dont blog
The rock it to the bang bang boogie say up jumped the boogie
To the rhythm of the boogie, the beat
Now what you hear is not a test - I'm claquin to the blog
And me, the groove, and my friends are gonna try to move your mind
Ya see: I am Wonder MikeSDCA and I like to say hello
To the black, to the white, the red, and the brown, the purple and yellow
But first I gotta bang bang the boogie to the boogie
Say up jump the boogie to the bang bang boogie
Let's rock, you don't stop
Rock the rhythm that will make your body rock
Well, so far you've heard my voice but I brought two friends along
And next on the mike is my man Hank:
Come on, Hank, claque that blog...

*patiently waits for his man Hank to claque that blog

It's not realistic to test for all drugs, I would assume they would only test for drugs that effect perception or motor skills. Maybe Viagra does that, or amplifies other drugs...I don't know...

On it's own Viagra can mess with vision and hearing, plus bad reaction means heart/circulation issues effects. Viagra plus stuff it interacts with have a lot of varied effects. I would be very, very hesitant to be a passenger in a car with the driver on Viagra. Drunk plus Viagra is just plain nuts.

I'm puzzled over the Hated Jew thing. She's not a Jew! Or is it that the "liberal media" will treat her as a hated Jew? What does that mean? The whole thing is Loooneey (say it like Joanne Worely).

May or may not be relevant, but have you ever encountered Christians that view themselves as the "true" Jews (and all religious and cultural Jews as having straying)? There are some Charismatic/Neo-Pentecostals who do this appropriation of everything Jewish (based of course on their own views, having very little to do with actual Judaism.)

They'll celebrate some Jewish holidays, purchase items from Israel, don tallitot when they pray, re-vamp their liturgical songs to sound vaguely Jerusalem-y, etc.

Often, they are CUFI types. I've known a lot of those types. They really resent Judaism unless it's the sort practiced by their Messianic friends.

Yeah, Messianic Judaism is a universe of its own. Lots of strains. My parents had Messianic Jewish friends when I was growing up -- really old hippies who agreed with Christian/Charismatic theology but weren't interested in the least in hiding or losing their Jewish ethnic/cultural identity.

I can't judge them, but I can definitely judge how people like my parent's friends get used in rwnj Christian convert-the-Jews scams.

If you're interested in the type of worship that appeals to the Christian types who reaaaaaallly really want to be the "true Jews", often attendees of "Christian Center" neo-Pentecostal/Charismatic megachurches, look up Paul Wilbur Ministries in Jacksonville, on youtube.

That's the cultural heart of Christian Zionism. Only in America...

Yea, but all the symbolism on there is Jewish. The scroll, Hebrew, Shabbat, but the point of it is to still the Messiah which is not terribly Jewish. I mean, we wait for the Messiah, we hope he comes in our time! But we don't dwell on it. Like I said above, kind of snarky, we keep ourselves busy waiting for the arrival.

Hey don't be laughing, it's not as easy as it sounds. :D

Seriously, though, there are cultural things one does not lose so easily, especially when from Black Christianity in the US.

For instance, my home denomination is inseparable from Civil Rights history, dating back to the 1700s. That, I do not wish to lose nor can I, regardless of how much of the beliefs and dogmas I disavow. So it gets complicated. That's the way the ball bounces I guess. :/

The dash? It's a respectful thing. Others see it as a form of blasphemy. G-d's names should never be written on a piece of paper where it can be destroyed, but actually I think that would be closer to the Hebrew name, not the G word, but even so, the habit of not actually spelling it took form.

Yes I remember now, someone not here for a while said it was a form of respect and used it that way.

No doubt I will sound disrespectful to some, but good grief; intelligent sentients who give a shit about spelling of words??

No doubt I said something similar before, but this is stupidity in its most genetically fundamental form.

Blasphemy is a big giant dealio in Judaism. It's tied to idolatry, too. I know SFZ could explain it better, but you don't want to as much toy with the idea of ever defaming G-d or his name and now I'm feeling like I have to stop typing the "O" if I'm gonna talk about it eh?

I -m Wh- -m...I don't think it's blasphemy to spell "god" or "God" but I also think God is a metaphor for the self and not an actual spook living above the clouds. That said, I have grown to accept that some people feel better spelling G dash d for god and don't see any issue with it. Faith is a personal issue.

Is that Yahwehs? I never encountered anyone like that personally no. I have evangelical friends, Pentecostal, but religion rarely comes up.

My experience is akin to OhCrapIHaveACrushOnSarahPalin--Christian Zionists belonging to non-denominational churches--but on the internet. There's a deep but very obliquely expressed contempt for Judaism as cultural/religious/ethnic complex that comes through, usually caged as "disappointment" or "concern." Bascially, they want Jews to meet their expectations of what "Jewish" is, or at very least apologize for not living up to their standards (and killing Jesus).

re: #467 marjoriemoon

One day we were standing at the elevator alone and I thought it was a perfect time to ask with no one around so i did! He explained his family was from Spain during the Inquisition and they converted to Catholicism, but kept the Jewish holidays in secret. Generations down the line, they still celebrate the holidays, eat Jewish foods, wear the Star, etc, but he said he was Catholic and goes to mass.

The Crypto-Jews of Spain were pretty bad-ass...they had that organization-plus-improvisation genius akin to the Underground Railroad (or ninjas!) for setting up a subtle system for communicating and gathering. A lot of them ended up in Acapulco, and later California and the US Southwest. There's a really neat mystery novel called "The Lase Kabbalist of Lisbon" that's about a murder among the Marranos.

I capitalize God in "God is a metaphor" as I'm referring to the mono-deity that most Christians, Jews and Muslims believe in - since that's the predominant god on the planet. The gods of the Greeks, the gods of the Hindus, the gods of the Native Americans are all too numerous and idiosyncratic to mention by name, so I just call them 'gods'...

Somebody started this "tradition". I'm interested to know if it is a blog meme/viral or a real dogma for some. I do think there are laws for some about not speaking the word, just as there are about Muslims for representing the images of Muhammad (none available for Allah, conveniently). But I am somewhat surprised to see this "tradition" expressed still on an otherwise above average enlightened blog.

It doesn't matter how many credentials he has, when he says crap like this:

Meanwhile, revolutionary breakthroughs in the exploration for and recovery of natural gas, oil, tar sands, shale oil and coal deposits in just a year or two have vastly expanded the nation's fossil fuel reserves and the ability to produce clean energy from them.

There is no way of producing clean energy from any fossil fuel.

Why on earth does he think there is? This is about as basic as you can get. Fossil fuels produce CO2. Clean coal is a marketing term, not a scientific reality.

I wonder how Minnesota is holding up. Charles blames the shutdown on the GOP. Why am I not surprised. But, according to the news articles I've read, the GOP legislature passed 9 budget bills that incorporated a 6% increase in spending. Governor Dayton wanted a 15% increase in spending. The dispute involves only some of the budget bills, not all of them. But Dayton vetoed all of them.

Cruel, heartless Republicans only increase spending by 6%. The governor vetoes all the spending bills, no just the ones that he feels do not spend enough, because he wants spending increased by 15%. Looks to me like the shutdown is Governor Dayton's fault. Dayton wants government shut down and he wants it to be as painful as possible because he assumes the public will blame the GOP. Charles certainly blames them. The Star Tribune blames them. I wonder what the public will believe?

ME stands for "Methodist Episcopal".

Short story, the Wesleyans and Methodists broke off of the Anglicans. In the US, they called themselves Episcopalians, after their form of church polity.

The Methodist Episcopal Church (MEC) liked evangelical styles of Methodism but still thought of themselves as products of the Anglicans. [Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

Nonsense. It is fools like Dayton pursuing "millionaire taxes" that are screwing people over. Taxing the hell out of millionaires won't do much to close the budget holes. It will make the class warriors happy. Of course, it is not the millionaires who should be paying more...it is the billionaires. If you have a net worth of a billion dollars, you don't need income any more. All you need is cash flow. Sell of some winning stocks/investments along with some losing stocks/investments and you have all the money you need to pay your living expenses (and no net income). Billionaires love pushing for taxes in millionaires...makes them feel really liberal. In truth, they are screwing us all.

I worked with a family of ex-Indian Israeli Jews from Goa, but they were Indian only since they moved there with Portuguese colonists more recently. Amazing food, the best in our office parties.

Fascinating! There Black Quakers then?

No - Methodists. Quakers/Religious Society of Friends are a different branch of Christianity with more historical ties with Calvinists, Puritans (even though the latter treated Quakers like shyt), Mennonites, and Amish than the Methodists.

A lot of it dates back to old theological/moral/ethical/economic squabbles from 17th-18th c Europe, whether on the continent or Britian. But by the time they all got over here and started bumping up against each other, well, this is why we have a First Amendment lol

I know quite a lot about income. I have a masters in tax law from one of the top LL.M. programs in the country. The real question is how to define income. A better question is how to get the revenues we need for the government to function out of the economy in a way that will cause the least amount of distortion and will be the most fair. The wealthiest Americans do not pay enough in taxes. All these politicians talking about imposing taxes on millionaires are only talking about income taxes. The wealthiest Americans do not necessarily have the highest incomes. An income tax often (not always) hits the people who are the most productive).

re: #563 Decatur Deb

So your church retained the ME, and the Methodists dropped the E later. Always wondered.

Yeah. AME, CME (broke off from the MECS), AME Zion all kept the ME.

That moniker wasn't truly abandoned until the 60s when a lot of these disparate white Methodist groups who had split off of each other over various things like slavery, Fundamentalism, Scopes Trial/evolution/science, all came back together, postwar.

That's what gave us the United Methodist Church (UMC).

But if you go to certain parts of the midwest and south, for instance, you'll see a lot of UMC churches with ME cornerstones. None of this speaks to American Methodism and Indian tribes. Messed up history, for which they have formally apologized. [Link: www2.wcc-coe.org...]

Black Methodists look at things like that and just say...and you wonder why we broke away from these people in the 1700s..

Attended a bunch of Episcopalian churches from high mass, 1928 prayerbook, to low/guitar mass over the years. If we are on the same wavelegnth, it's some of that strange and ugly history that gave me pause for conversion.

Still, I really dig the Episcopalians. Especially some of the congregations in the south that are going through heck because of this sexuality bit, and people running off and calling themselves "Anglicans", with zero connection to Canturbury. Lol alas, Protestantism.

How tedious. Of course, he follows up with an email, as usual:

Yeah, look out for those "home truths."

I invite anyone to look at what I posted in this thread and decide for yourself whether I treated this person fairly.

What I don't get is that people scream about fairness. What fairness? This is your blog. It's not a publicly held company or even an elementary school play ground.

You are fair, IMHO, but screaming about fairness, right, wrong, whatever is childish. What are trolls going to do, run and tell mommy? sue?

Oh, I forgot, they start their own blogs and tell the rest of the world (probably because Mommy won't listen anymore) how unfair you are.

Speaking of bullying.

So now "bullying" is disagreeing with a comments poster on one's own site.

What is with all the crybaby politics, groan.

How convenient that his blood alcohol percentage was 0.097%..... This stinks a bit...

From this article:

burned-out headlight.

Mecklenborg, who was driving a 2004 Lexus with temporary Kentucky plates, failed several sobriety tests and his blood alcohol content was registered at 0.097 percent, according to the documents. A toxicology screening also picked up Viagra and another pharmaceutical drug in his system.

Only juuuuust below the 0.10% level....
From the Ohio Drunk Driving Laws:

A key provision of Ohio’s DUI law is administrative license suspension (ALS). Under the law (effective September 1, 1993), any motorist stopped for drunk driving who refuses to take the sobriety test or whose test results exceed the legal limit of .10% Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) will have his/her license taken administratively on the spot, with suspension effective immediately. Depending on previous offenses, the ALS period can range from 90 days to five years.

(Let's give him the benefit of the doubt and say this was his first alcohol offence, for the sake of arguement.)

First offense: Fine—$200 to $1,000; ALS for 90 days for .10% BAC or above; ALS for test refusal is one year license suspension; Jail—minimum of three consecutive days or three-day driver intervention program; Court license suspension is six months to three years

He's slipping through the system!

It's hot and my irony detector has shorted out. Gotta go up to the bedroom for some air conditioning.

Here is what the mint says about coin production:

Cost of Producing the Penny, Nickel, Dime, Quarter, Half-dollar and Golden Dollar Coins.

Golden Dollar $0.2114
Half Dollar $0.1697
Quarter $0.0733
Dime $0.314
Nickle $0.0456
Penny $0.0093

The obvious typo (highlighted) sent me to the US Mint in curiosity. Page 29 of the 2010 annual report ( [Link: www.usmint.gov...] ) has costs as:
One-Cent $ 0.0176
Five-Cent $ 0.0916
Dime $ 0.0454
Quarter-Dollar $ 0.0956
$1 (Dollar) $ 0.165

Just as an FYI

I thought we were a "clique" now we are a "claque?" We are a "clique claque"?

Late to the party, but...

Queue-Clatche: The group of people who you walk past over and over again while waiting in line for a ride at an amusement park, due to the repetitive back-and-forth pattern of the waiting line.

There's a drug test for Viagra? And police use it on suspected drunken drivers?

re: #641 William of Orange

0,10%? Wow. Here in Norway, the limit is 0,2. That's not per cent, though, that's per mille. With 0,1%, he would have been bound for prison, and he'd lose his driver license for two years. The fine would have equalled his salary of one and half month.

Anyway, it was in Indiana he was stopped, wasn't it? Not Ohio.

647 hambone  Mon, Jul 4, 2011 6:40:58pm

Wow that cop sure had patience with that guy. The people of Ohio must be glad he was drunk so that other people don't think they elected an idiot who can't follow basic directions. I'm sure he will beg Gods forgiveness and will put this all behind him. cause it's always do as they say not as they do.
