Most affirmative action— not at colleges, but in hiring— is simply the policy that, all other things being equal, you hire the guy from the background that’s underrepresented. It gets mixed up with quota-based affirmative action in people’s minds, a lot.

I know that, and I tried to draw a distinction between the two. It is tough, especially since I grew up in a rabid right-wing environment where the two were conflated constantly.
