Actually, that was never the dominant scientific view; this is a canard. It was put forward by a very few climatologists and - during peer review - was found to be lacking. It never enjoyed wide support within the scientific community.
There was lots of hype about it in the media, helped along by a couple of unusually cold winters in the eastern US. But it was never a matter of scientific consensus or anything close to it.
I was taught about the imminent ice age in 1966, in elementary school. When did the literature right itself?
