I am sure we will differ on this one a bit. For a Photo-Op only, we agree - Get a good camera and capture images of the great beasts - digitally or on film, preferably KODACHROME - as long as it lasts. 500mm lenses are really cheap on e-bay as are 2x extenders. On a compatible Digital SLR, 1000mm = something more like 1500mm converted to 35mm film format.
As to an animal that I would shoot and EAT - a bit different. That is all.
