Much better for the prom than wooden shoes and lederhosen.

The student chose the dress because it was pretty and looked good on her. (It does.) And probably a lot more comfortable to wear than the usual prom dress, especially in hot weather.

Some people are just overly sensitive.

Qipao were influenced by Western clothing styles, anyway, back in the 1920s. They were standard for elegant Shanghai ladies. Before then, they were only worn as wedding dresses.
