A Beautiful Bob Schneider Performance: “Love Is Everywhere,” Ft. Tosca Strings

I guess I’m in a mood to take a break from posting about politics today (and also dealing with iPhone upgrade issues for way too long), because I stumbled across this incredible version of one of my favorite Bob Schneider songs, with a gorgeous string arrangement played by Tosca Strings.

The title of the song is deceptively positive.

KUTX presents Bob Schneider performing “Love Is Everywhere” ft. Tosca Strings live from Studio 1A on November 15th, 2013

Lyrics:

Soon Yin was a pilot in the nationally known
Amazing ladies of the outer ozone

She didn’t have no kids, she didn’t have no time
She was a woman of her word, she was a fighter of crime
She looked good in a hat, she had a natural way
With tools and no car she went to UCLA

And everybody said she was as crazy as a loon
When she was a girl she’d spend every afternoon

Sitting in her backyard pretending to be
A fighter ace in the Japanese military
She liked to make up her mind, she kept her feet in the air
She wore her heart on her sleeve ‘cause she liked it there

And it was all well and good until she met this young man
A young pilot named Steve with a beautiful tan

He spoke English and French and he swam like a swan
He had a mouth full of teeth and more style than Cézanne
He could talk to the bees, he could breathe in the air
He wore his heart on his sleeve ‘cause he’d found it there

And they’d sit in the trees and they’d talk through the night
While the blind moon swam in the pale starry light
They talked and they crowed and they told what they knew
It was better than beer, it was all strange and new

There was grass all around, there was black up above
It was more than hello, it was something like love

And I don’t know why life, it seems to be
So hard for dreamers like you and me
When love is, love is, love is everywhere

LOL, from the Amazon book description:

In a culture steeped in passivity and addiction, many women make horrific mistakes in the men they choose and pay dearly for it. But how does a guy learn how to be a good man? How does a woman learn to recognize him? What does manhood really look like?

You know, I don’t like Reagan at all but there’s a big difference between Reagan’s handling of the USSR and Trump’s of NK. Reagan was dealing with a good faith actor in Gorby. Kim Jong Un isn’t a good faith actor who will gladly exploit Trump to get good PR to re-enforce his image. No one in the USSR thought Gorby was a God among men. Not the case in NK with Kim.

Yeah I don’t get why Rudy’s so far up Trump’s ass. I’ve always found him obnoxious but this still was a guy who prosecuted mobsters and actually in fact endorsed Bill for re-election in 1996. Now he’s reduced to slobbering over Trump on Hannity and being a disgrace.

A post several layers downstairs said Cobb was increasingly frustrated with Drumpf’s tweet storms and how it was killing any reasonable possibility of defending the spunktrumpet, and told him so.

So Trumpf apparently had had enough (“Nobody makes me bleed my own blood!”) and canned him.

I imagine Cobb was fine with leaving, knowing that the shit gibbon was not going to listen to anyone and was perfectly willing to play the cinematic version of Cut-Me-Own-Throat Dibbler.

They’re feeding the audience new talking points about how nothing wrong occurred and this is all a witch hunt.

Their viewers are people who don’t actually care how the law works, they just like the invocation of the law as justification. Give them an “explanation” that suits their existing presumptions and they will believe it.

They’re desperately trying to unpaint themselves from the corner. I think the idea is:

A.) they realize that the contract is void if there’s no compensation from Trump to Daniels. So they’re trying to tie Trump in to preserve the NDA. This still doesn’t get around the fact that he never signed the contract and repeatedly asserted that he knew nothing about it.

B.) That if the money ultimately came from Trump that the campaign finance limits don’t apply. Unfortunately for them the campaign finance reporting requirements still do apply and Trump never declared these payments.

Flat-Earthers Explain Why We Don’t Fall Off the Edge of Our Planet, and It Involves Pac-Man

More than 200 flat-Earth enthusiasts descended on West Midlands, England, this past weekend to “engage freely in deep and meaningful discussions,” according to the Flat Earth Convention UK.

The Earth’s glorious globular-ness was proved more than 2,000 years ago by the ancient Greeks, but there’s a small subset of people who think the planet is a disk despite enjoying the downward pull of gravity that could only result from living on a sphere.

At this conference, they were presenting their scientific evidence for such a disk. One of the more interesting pieces of evidence came from speaker Darren Nesbit, who referred to the “Pac-Man effect” as the reason why planes don’t fall off the edge of a flat Earth, according to the science news website physics-astronomy.org. When a plane or other object reaches the edge of the horizon, such as when Pac-Man reaches the end of the screen, that object will teleport from one side of the planet to the other, a la Pac-Man entering from the other side of the screen.

Can I ask the lawyers here a question about some lawyery stuff that I’m dealing with? I hired a lawyer through an employee-help service at work to do an expungment of a misdemeanor from 15 years ago. It’s the only time I’ve ever been in the court system.

I’ve been given a flat fee by the lawyer plus a few bucks for supplies and a filing fee. How much of the fee is usually paid up front? Is there anything detrimental about paying the full fee up front? Will she feel better about working for me if she’s already got the full funding to move ahead with the case?

The whole case should only take a couple months to (oh please god hopefully) resolve, so it seems like it might be kind of cheap to dole out the fee over every week or two. I hope that the courts can throw their mercy on the stupid mistake I make one time and never again afterwards,

The whole thing is been blown way of proportion. I feel so bad for her that people have given her a hard time. I have a photo of my niece in a Costa Rican dress and Kenyan my brother bought her. The people there didn’t object seeing a blonde white dude buying that for his girl.

First the Fox News crowd had Donny call in to F&F to rant and scream while they sat there looking very uncomfortable.

Now Hannity brought on Rudy thinking he was going to get some look into a brilliant legal strategy that would save Donny’s ass…and instead played part in Rudy basically shredding his own client’s entire case.

How do they top that?

Much better for the prom than wooden shoes and lederhosen.

The student chose the dress because it was pretty and looked good on her. (It does.) And probably a lot more comfortable to wear than the usual prom dress, especially in hot weather.

Some people are just overly sensitive.

Qipao were influenced by Western clothing styles, anyway, back in the 1920s. They were standard for elegant Shanghai ladies. Before then, they were only worn as wedding dresses.

Trump Repaid Cohen for Stormy Daniels Hush Money, Giuliani Says

[…]

In an interview with The New York Times shortly after his Fox News appearance, Mr. Giuliani said that he had documentation showing that Mr. Trump had personally made the payments, and he indicated that the goal was to conclusively demonstrate that there was no campaign finance violation involved.

“That removes the campaign finance violation, and we have all the documentary proof for it,” Mr. Giuliani said. He added that when the initial payment was made, Mr. Cohen did it “on his own authority.”

The problem is that you have people with a shallow understanding of culture (on the internet) doing callouts with little reference to the specific cultural base and the meaning of the object.

Cultural appropriation as a activist concern stemmed from people ripping off spiritual concepts, rituals, and objects and repackaging them as consumables for a (mostly white) global audience, stripped of context and shaved down to vague, general platitudes. “Plastic shamanism”—products and experiences sold with the cachet of native “wisdom” and a soupcon of Native imagery—was where I encountered the idea.

Commodification of culture—particularly sacred concepts—was another point of frustration. For example, imitation Maori tattoos offend Maori because it’s like identity theft…those marks mean something very specific, they’re not just aesthetic, nor are they purchasable. But over time, there’s also arisen stuff like intellectual property issues…where a company or designer takes a design from native material culture and mass-produces it…which pisses the orginators off even…indeed, especially…if they created pieces for sale. Southwestern jewelry—silver and turquoise, squash blossom necklaces—is a good example of the latter.

But what we have now is people—many of whom aren’t of the culture in question—jumping to the big reaction without waiting to appreciate the meaning of the item in its original context.

I think you missed a big one. Both Trump and Cohen are clearly guilty of campaign finance laws. That’s the timing. Trump didn’t want the story coming out right before the election. Offered me a glass of wine and presented me with this huge ass glass filled, like a half bottle of wine. Yikes. Then there was cannabis vape. Very tasty.

At one point Tom asks me what I think of this Lexus SUV parked at the office across from his pad and I said it was the ugliest thing and who would design that horrid grill that looked like The Predator. They both crack up. That Lexus is $100,000 and it’s Vladamir’s. Oh. But it does look like the Predator. See?

Tell me that face didn’t inspire the Lexus grill design.

That’s not the point. Either Cohen made a contribution that should have been reported, or Trump did, using Cohen as his agent. At least one is in big (jail-time) trouble, and very likely both.

My guess is that there are things in the papers seized from Cohen that prove Trump paid for it, so he’s getting ahead of that story with his fingers crossed. But there could be all kinds of stuff in there.

But we don’t know that, do we?

Wasn’t Rudy’s justification for his ramble that he wanted to show that the money did not come from the campaign, but from Trump personally?

Yes, that was exactly the point of his entire spiel. But as I mentioned earlier, that opens up a whole batch of other problems for Drumpf. If it was Drumpf money, it had to be declared. And it should have showed up on Cohen’s returns, also, if it was reimbursed over a calendar year (and Rudy said it was spaced out over time, i.e. from 2016 through 2017).

So, depending on what they filed, even if it had nothing to do with the Campaign money, it should have shown up on both Drumpf and Cohen’s 2016 and 2017 personal tax returns. Because it was, you know, money paid to a third party by Cohen and then reimbursed to Cohen by real money from Drumpf. My understanding is that those transactions had to be declared, or they were both guilty of tax fraud.

So Rudy helped Drumpf by killing the concept that the hush money came from the Campaign and screwed both Drumpf and Cohen by saying that it was “funneled” personal money which I can promise you did not show up on any tax filing.

Let’s all say this together, shall we? “Illegally Laundered Hush Money.”

Do you like the sound of that? I do! It’s the tinkling bells of a felony. A high crime or misdemeanor.

Dollar Bill certainly had the cash to pay off Monica Lewinsky, but he didn’t. If he had, he would certainly been convicted by the Senate.

re: #327 austin_blue

It’s bullshit, of course. Fashion isn’t cultural, it’s just textiles. A huayabana is a comfortable Central American shirt in a hot climate. I’m not stealing from Costa Ricans if I wear one. If Charles wears a classic Hawaiian shirt, he’s not a thieving haole ripping off native culture. If my friend Oliver Rajamani’s German wife Anita wears a churidar, she not stealing anything from Indian culture. She is celebrating its beauty.

It’s a stupid argument and whoever made needs to be told to STFU and STFD.

In this specific instance, cheongsams are fashion thats less than a century old, that consciosuly blended Eastern influences and Western influences. It dates back to the 1920s.

It’s not appropriation. Lots of Chinese Americans are telling them that.

What confuses the issue is the mock bowing that was done, which a lot of people quite rightly were irritated about—-there’s no question that a lot of racist yahoos did that to humiliate Asian Americans. That the gestures were taken from a youtube star is more than a little unfortunate—-and the kids have to acknowledge that.

Exactly. The points, plural, are:

1) Trump pays hush money;
2) Trump and his lawyer lie about it;
3) This exposes, again, the hypocrisy of the religious-right leaders in their continued support that Trump can’t do anything wrong;
4) Trump can’t keep a legal team because he’s unhinged;
5) Trump has other civil suits against him, even more serious;
6) As Trump has already shown he’s an intractable liar, in these other suits a sane judge or jury will immediately doubt him;
7) And we haven’t even gotten to Russia or the emoluments yet.

1. I didn’t pay the money, the woman is lying
2. I didn’t pay the money but somebody I hardly know did, had nothing to do with me
3. I didn’t pay the money, somebody I know did, doesn’t matter

The issue is electricity. Plattsburgh has some of the cheapest electricity in the nation, due to proximity to a dam. However, that means industrial scale mining operations moved to town, and the city is having to buy much more expensive electricity from outside the area. Miners are effectively passing the costs of their raising money onto residents of Plattsburgh.

Needless to say, more libertarian-types who want to set up shop in Plattsburgh are yowling “unfair.”

NASA’s response was well executed, too:

NASA said in a statement that voting was compromised, prompting it to shut down public voting earlier than expected. The federal space agency said it encourages the use of social media to build support for projects but wrote in a statement Tuesday that public voting was ended because people “attempted to change the vote totals.”

“Unfortunately, it was brought to NASA’s attention yesterday that some members of the public used social media, not to encourage students . . . but to attack a particular student team based on their race and encourage others to disrupt the contest and manipulate the vote, and the attempt to manipulate the vote occurred shortly after those posts,” the NASA statement read.

Greets and saluts from the resistance in the NYC metro area.

It’s a glorious summer day (in early May) as temps here are expected to breach 90 once again.

It’s also the glorious aftermath of Rudy’s wonderful and insightful confab with Hannity last night.

Rudy spent an entire hour with Hannity talking about what Trump did or did not do, and how everything is a witch hunt and that Trump didn’t do anything wrong.

Mind you, Rudy also admitted that Trump did indeed break the law with Cohen last night - that money was exchanged and that it was in relation to the NDA despite Trump lying previously about this.

Well, hold on because Trump got on Twitter this morning to completely eviscerate what Rudy laid out last night.

Everyone is agog at this? Why?

All Trump does is lie. He lies to the nation about everything. He lies to his lawyers. He lies to himself. There’s not a honest bone in his body. This shouldn’t be surprising.

The only thing to come out of the show last night was that Rudy, Hannity, and Trump are all lying and covering for even worse actions. Rudy’s in the unenviable position of having to defend a client who refuses to shut up and listen to his advisers and counsel.

That means no matter how much Rudy might try to spin the facts and evidence to indicate no wrongdoing, Trump will just come along and say the opposite and invite even more scrutiny for everyone involved.

There isn’t enough popcorn for this mess.

POLITICS 05/03/2018 06:01 am ET
Democratic Midterm Momentum Has ‘Stalled,’ Top Party Pollster Warns
Democrats need to refocus on the economic and health care challenges their voters face, the pollster said.

A top Democratic pollster is warning his party’s candidates not to buy into the GOP’s rosy messaging on the economy and tax cuts, arguing they need to spotlight the economic headwinds and rising health care costs their base voters still face heading into the midterm elections.
The advice stems from new polling provided exclusively to HuffPost from Women’s Voices Women Vote Action Fund, Greenberg Research, and Democracy Corps. The polls, conducted by phone and web panel, surveyed more than 3,000 registered voters in Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Tennessee and Wisconsin - all states with contested governor and/or Senate races, as well as competitive House contests.
“Democrats must not be distracted by the macro-economic and jobs-report numbers” Republicans have been touting, pollster Stan Greenberg wrote in a memo, authored with Democracy Corps’ Nancy Zdunkewicz and Page Gardner, president of the Women Voices Women Vote group. “It is a mistake to accept that GOP narrative and attribute credit to [former] President [Barack] Obama or insist it’s despite [President Donald] Trump and Republicans.”

I always worry about our chances, but given that, even in our loss, we still pulled +13 over the previous election, I’m not sure what they mean by “stalling.” Also, though, here’s the thing: Every message we have is anti-Trump. We’re for higher taxes on the rich, the opposite of Trump. We’re for more spending in schools, the opposite of Trump. On and on. We think minorities and immigrants should treated right, the opposite of Trump. No more Nazis. We’re against his corruption.

I worry that a lot of these polling groups are trying to do the same job Bernie’s doing, and steer Democrats towards an economic message and not a “we are all in this together” message.

As both a disabled veteran and a Gold Star Family member, I’ve long despised conservative politicians (and their voters) using us for political props or to “own the libs,” then totally forget about us when the chips are down (like funding the VA or supporting said families).

Mitch McConnell is sitting on HR 3897, a bill to correct a problem with Gold Star Children having access to military bases for their benefits if their surviving parent remarries (losing access to the base). The bill was introduced by Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE2) and sponsored by four Republicans and four Democrats.

Ensuring access to benefits is not on Mitch McConnell’s radar. As leader of the Senate, he and his cronies don’t give a crap about us.

I’ve posted this before, and I’ll post it again: Democrats can win by tackling race and class together. Here’s proof

The race-class flyer says “Whether white, black, or brown, 5th generation or newcomer, we all want to build a better future for our children. My opponent says some families have value, while others don’t count. He wants to pit us against each other in order to gain power for himself and kickbacks for his donors.”

And from there, it’s so easy to go to a discussion on the issues voters are labeling most important (health care, economy, etc) and point out how Democratic policies are infinitely superior to what’s coughed up by GOPers.

Honestly, if I could fire every over-priced consultant and just give all the Democratic candidates the article above, I would.

It’s like Guilliani went on Hannity to talk to an audience of one (something it seems all Trump surrogates do), but then forgot that the rest of us were also watching (are Hannity’s ratings that bad?)

Yeah, but bear in mind that Verbal Kint was actually Keyser Söze, the criminal mastermind everyone was looking for.

Trump is most certainly no Keyser Söze. Söze/Kint was intelligent enough to concoct an elaborate - and plausible - story that got him released from police custody.

Trump would be on his way to Florence ADX five minutes after opening his mouth.

And now you know why Kellyanne got all pissy on CNN when the one reporter asked her about her husband’s tweets which often do not line up with Kellyanne’s gibberish.

Kellyanne, it has been said, often makes fun of the shit she says when not on TV. I think it was Mika and Joe that first mentioned she was like that on their show.

Kellyanne is a paid-by-the-word mercenary. She probably knows Trump is a bag of crap but it is a job, she gets on TV and she gets to do what she absolutely loves the most…word sparing with others.

I think the figure if they don’t talk about Jr, nobody will pay attention to him (it’s worked for the last 40 years). And as for Ivanka, she’s always been the true heir, the one closest to Donald, so it makes sense that she knows more, is more involved, and more likely a co-conspirator. It makes sense that Trump is worried about Ivanka going down, because on some level even he recognizes that she’s the “best and brightest” of that clan. At age eleven, he moved to Lincoln, Nebraska with his family, his father becoming a professor of engineering at the University of Nebraska. Lauck skipped his senior year of high school and then attended the University of Nebraska for two years. By this point, he already held neo-Nazi beliefs. In 1978, he shot and wounded his brother Jerry after a political dispute. Eventually, Lauck moved to Chicago, where he would spend most of his adult life. I know where those buildings are: we had friends who lived in one them a while back: this was one of those BFD “developments” Trump used to crow about for years. The (8? 10?) residential buildings were built on the site of the old Penn Central railyards: he bought the development rights from the bankruptcy trustee for what was basically pocket-change: waited out the inevitable challenges for something like 15+ years, but eventually got the rights to develop the site for residences (and block the river views of the older buildings just inland, but them’s the breaks).
Of course, what most people didn’t realize until it came out (under-reported, of course) during the campaign is that Trump sold off his interest in the projects years before: but made them (as we see) keep his name on it for the “prestige” value.
So we see what that’s worth: The Donald really does have the Sadim Touch (“Midas” backwards)…

Conservatism has always been fundamentally opposed to democracy, in every nation, at all times.

Even the slur “Democrat Party” is not something new: The Oxford English Dictionary notes the first use was in 1899 by New Hampshire Republican Congressman Jacob H. Gallinger at a Republican gathering in Michigan:

The great Democrat party, laying down the sceptre of power in 1860, after ruling this country under free trade for a quarter of a century, left our treasury bankrupt, and gave as a legacy to the Republican party, a gigantic rebellion and a treasury without a single dollar of money in it.

So, it seems like ancient history, but the claims that Mueller leaked the questions being posed to Trump? I suspect that Rudy was the one who actually leaked them, and the past 24 hours seems to bear it out.

The whole point was to reframe the narrative and Rudy’s biggest mistake was his client.

Trump can’t stop lying and lying to everyone, including Rudy.

It’s lies all the way down.

Especially true since those weren’t even Mueller’s questions but questions written by Trump lawyers based on their discussions with Mueller’s team.

Well, here’s what Dawkins meant when he invented the concept in The Selfish Gene:

Dawkins used the term to refer to any cultural entity that an observer might consider a replicator. He hypothesized that one could view many cultural entities as replicators, and pointed to melodies, fashions and learned skills as examples. Memes generally replicate through exposure to humans, who have evolved as efficient copiers of information and behavior. Because humans do not always copy memes perfectly, and because they may refine, combine or otherwise modify them with other memes to create new memes, they can change over time. Dawkins likened the process by which memes survive and change through the evolution of culture to the natural selection of genes in biological evolution.[17]

Charlie Dent, America’s newest RINO!

“I don’t think there was anybody on the planet who thought that Michael Cohen, out of the goodness of his heart, wrote a $130,000 check to Stormy Daniels without seeking any reimbursement,” Dent told CNN. “I mean, who would do that?”

“I mean, tell me a lawyer who would write a check out of his own pocket for his client without a reimbursement?” he continued. “I mean, come on, I mean, we’re not fools here.”

Giuliani, Dent said, “simply stated what we already expected was the case.”

CNN’s Poppy Harlow noted that Giuliani told the Washington Post that Trump’s reimbursement payments to Cohen were made in 2017. Did that call for oversight hearings? she asked.

“Sure,” Dent said, adding later: “If a Democratic president had done this, we’d be waving a bloody shirt right now.”

Here’s the thing…ethically, an attorney can’t pay a settlement for his client, even if he’s going to be reimbursed. It’s commingling funds, which is a major no-no. This raises a few possibilities: 1) Cohen is going to get disbarred in the near future; 2) Cohen wasn’t wearing his “lawyer hat” at the time of the payment, thus putting another dent in his privilege claim; or 3) he wasn’t wearing his lawyer hat and he’s still getting disbarred.

re: #670 Backwoods_Sleuth

Democrats here have a couple of winning issues to run against Republicans.

There was discussion about the idea of “running against Trump” being a bad idea.

Trump’s tariff war with China will likely cause targeted retaliation against soybean farmers in this state, and perhaps corn farmers as well. Once they lose those markets to another nation they’re gone.

In addition, Trump’s trade war with Mexico (wanting to scrap NAFTA) takes away one of the biggest markets ranchers in this state have.

Farmers and ranchers both here are justifiably worried about all this trade nonsense, and it is all self-inflicted by Trump and supported by Republicans. My own representative is trying to straddle the fence (support Trump and distance himself from a trade war with Mexico and China).

His Democratic challenger (yay! we have one this time!) Paul Theobald intends to run on those issues. NE-3 was rated by FiveThirtyEight in the last election as the most GOP leaning district in the nation.

Will he have to quit his CNN gig?

Probably not.

Still, the mere fact that Lewandowski is on the radar for the top job, after the campaign fired him in the spring of 2016, underscores his rising stock and the changing climate. The president is increasingly focused on the midterms and, my sources say, believes the combative Lewandowski can be a valuable asset as Democratic chances of winning the House seem to be improving.

Does the word of the president mean anything? Or can he just lie for months (Stormy Daniels), years (Barack Obama’s birth certificate) or decades (Central Park Five) and then one day change his story with no consequences?

Just like Obama on gay marriage, his positions “evolve” over time.

In other words, Cohen’s office was “raided” because there was a fear by investigators that he would destroy evidence if he was simply served a subpoena and given time to “lose” all those papers. He might face charges for destruction of evidence, but the evidence would remain destroyed and thus Schrodinger’s client (i.e. Trump) would be in the clear.

Really, you could read Rudy and Cheeto Benito’s remarks over the last 16 hours as an effort to back the bus over Cohen. They’re saying that while Trump was aware of the payment, they’re implying he only found out because Cohen basically sent a bill for “services rendered” and Trump worked out a payment plan “on the down low” to avoid Cohen’s actions from becoming public. You could read their argument now as the beginnings of an effort to suggest that Cohen extorted money from Trump by saying “I did you a solid, now you do me a solid.”
