According to the NYT blog on the primary, Gingrich said in his victory speech:

“They have no understanding, no care” about the people, he said, adding that those elites have been “trying for a half century” to tell people not to be Americans.

Hmmm… half a century… that would be 1961… which is conveniently before the Civil Rights Act and the real desegregation of the South.

Oh yes, Gingrich knows his audience.
