South Carolina Primary Thread

The South will vote again
Politics • Views: 25,951

Here’s a thread to keep up on breaking news from South Carolina, where it looks like a former Speaker of the House who was forced to resign in disgrace is going to be the choice of the Republican Party…

UPDATE at 1/21/12 5:11:19 pm

And there we have it — Mitt Romney has conceded the South Carolina primary to Newt Gingrich. Apparently, 73% of the votes for Gingrich came from evangelicals, who are oddly unconcerned about Newt’s sleazy, very “liberal” personal life. But at least he’s not a Satanic Mormon.

You definitely called the inevitability of Romney a bit early. This year has been completely crazy. Combine that with the fact that delegates are being assigned perportionally until April I believe, and we could have a close primary season for months.

Mitt Romney is still up by 13% in the Cayman Islands.

Nope, I still think Romney’s nomination is inevitable.

When your party has used fury, hatred, and misrepresentation incessantly for three solid years, your electorate ends up rewarding angry demagogues. However, I expect the Republican machine to come down on Newt very, very hard over the next week. He was supposed to be useful to them. Winning the nomination would not, in fact, be useful.

After this, Romney had better release his tax returns, or stay home.

Those tax returns must be really, really interesting. It’s already rumored he pays less than 15%; and it’s already out that he parks money offshore. So what else could they show that’s worse than that?

As do I. I just think it’s going to take longer, which only helps Obama as the GOP spends weeks/months tearing each other to bits on live TV. A drawn out, contentious primary season and the potential for a contested convention is the GOP’s worst nightmare this year.

It should be. The fact that Romney has not yet buried this incredibly weak field speaks volumes about what a weak candidate he himself is.

re: #3 Charles

Republicans are now stuck with either a weak and damaged candidate, or a brokered convention. I think that the higher-ups have been watching Mitt over the past few days and getting quite nervous about what they had set up as inevitable.
BTW, only 22% of Evangelicals in SC voted Mitt, according to the exit polls. Is it really possible that they prefer a serial adulterer to a Mormon? Can a Republican win without the evangelicals? Interesting questions for the Christianist right.

It is quite interesting. I suspect it has to do with Republican insecurity about the ‘intelligence’ of their party. Hence the total inability of Perry to get his campaign rebooted, despite being the closest to “Generic Republican.”

Yes. Evangelicals consider Mormons a cult that is barely a half-step above Satanist. They consider LDS to be irredeemable heretics. They’d absolutely vote for a serial adulterer before a Mormon.

Can a Republican win without the evangelicals?

If the GOP nominates Romney we’ll find out the answer.

From Huffpost:

Santorum Speaks On Primary Race, Future Of Campaign

When asked why he didn’t “kick butt” himself, Santorum said he didn’t get the support he hoped for after officially winning the Iowa Caucus.

“We didn’t get the bump that we really hoped for out of Iowa. We did well, but we didn’t win,” Santorum said.

The former Pennsylvania senator credited rival Rick Perry dropping out as part of the reason for his ongoing “momentum.”

“These last few days, I think you’ll see, we picked up some momentum,” Santorum said.

“We felt like we did get some support out there and some lift, and we’re going to see that play out in a much bigger way as we go down the line,” Santorum said of his continuing campaign.

Loosely translated, “Looks like I’m going back to Pennsylvania.”

Or stone:

As no more disks are being produced or imported, this money supply is fixed. The islanders know who owns which piece but do not necessarily move them when ownership changes. Their size and weight (the largest ones require 20 adult men to carry) make them very difficult to move around. Although today the United States dollar is the currency used for everyday transactions in Yap, the stone disks are still used for more traditional or ceremonial exchange. The stone disks may change ownership during marriages, transfers of land title, or as compensation for damages suffered by an aggrieved party.

Romney is still likely to win. Better organization, more money, less of a bombastic loose cannon than Newt.

But this is hardly an impressive showing. He’s actually only 1-for-3 now, since the recount showed him losing narrowly to Santorum in Iowa.

Ultimately I think most republicans can read a poll, and thus realize that Newt’s way behind Obama in head to head national matchups, while Mitt runs very close. Moreover, Newt’s unfavorables are sky high with moderates and independents. Then again, a lot of tea partiers still want to purify the party by kicking out alleged RINOs like Mitt. And a lot of Republicans have convinced themselves that Gingrich is the second coming of Churchill and will thus destroy Obama in debates. (As if debates were normally that pivotal, which they’re not.)

Anyone see the Rolling Stone article “What Mitt Romney Learned From His Dad”? Apparently, George Romney was an early opponent of the Vietnam war. In 1968, he was running against Richard Nixon for the Republican nomination:

The Mormon bishop, however, did not quit. Instead he leapfrogged across New Hampshire telling unseasonable truths – that LBJ was “spinning a web of delusion,” and that “when you want to win the hearts and minds of people, you don’t kill them and destroy their property. You don’t use bombers and tanks and napalm to save them.”

His opponent, meanwhile, running what you might call a robotic campaign, just bullshitted about Vietnam, hinting he had a secret plan to end it. The truth was a dull weapon to take into a knife fight with Richard Nixon – who kicked Romney’s ass with 79 percent of the vote.

Read more: rollingstone.com

Apparently, Mitt’s decided that he wasn’t going to make the mistake of telling any unseasonable truths.

Yep, it’s ‘04 for them, trying to run a campaign against Obama rather than for their own candidate, hoping that hate will be enough to win the day. Here’s my take. If Satan is gracious and Newt is the nominee…

Everyone on the right will scream how Newt kicked the President’s ass in the debates and is on his way to the White House.

Women on the right will find election day as a good day to finally get that storage closet re-arranged

I thought that too, but it doesn’t look like women were Newt’s problem. He won married women. Women on the right may be as crazy as the men.

Former Penn State coach Joe Paterno dies at 85

Joe Paterno, the man who for decades was synonymous with Penn State football and was known by the college football world as just “JoePa”, has died. Paterno, 85, had been receiving chemotherapy as part of his treatment for lung cancer, and complications from that treatment claimed the longtime Penn State coach’s life on Saturday.

This will now be a long battle for the nomination. Romney has money, organization and endorsements. What he doesn’t have is charisma or credibility, which is why he can’t put away a weak field of flawed challengers. The long Obama Clinton battle actually helped Obama, because Clinton was a credible candidate in her own right, and the battle elevated them. Romney having a death match with Newt only serves to reveal all of his own flaws.

I like the result. A big Gingrich victory is going to keep this nomination alive. Unlike 2008, when Obama and Clinton basically agreed with each other on everything apart from a difference in style, and were mostly civil, these Republicans are like spitting cobras. The longer this race goes on, the more they are going to soften up the eventual nominee for the general election. Democrats must NOT ease off in anticipation of victory though. The aim for Democrats must be to give President Obama the longest coattails he can possibly get, and ensure a strong Democratic Congress, and the possibility of more liberal judges in the Supreme Court to stop the damage that has already been done in SCOTUS in the last 12 years.

What’s sad about that is that the GOP establishment could pull out the long knives and spill all the gory details about Newt’s time as Speaker and the morans in the base would just love Newt that much more. Pelosi, having been part of the investigation, is threatening to release the truly juicy details if he wins the nomination.

New Rules for New Radicals: The Tea Party Discovers a Taste for….
Saul Alinsky!

Over the next four decades, Rules for Radicals, which Alinsky wrote as a handbook on how to organize for progressive political change, managed to stay in print, typically selling a few thousand copies a year—until last year. In the first six months of 2009, a period that included Barack Obama’s Inauguration and the rise of the Tea Party, an astonishing 37,987 copies of Rules for Radicals went out the door.

Yes, the Tea Partiers discovered Saul Alinsky! They are gobbling up copies of Rules for Radicals because many, if not most, believe that Alinsky is the reason we have a President Obama.

This is only a question if you are still confused or in denial about how far and how deep their prejudice goes. Adultery is forgivable, being a member of the wrong tribe is not.

I noticed the same thing when Palin’s daughter was found to be pregnant and unmarried. I thought it would upset the evangelical right, but it didn’t. Sinners are OK, if they’re their sinners.

Other folks (e.g. Clinton) will be excoriated for doing the same things that their folks (pastors, politicians, et. al.) can do with impunity.

I guess it’s to be expected that Newt would be forgiven—after all the group in the US with the highest divorce rates is the evangelicals. By having three sequential wives, Newt is proving he’s one of them.

…That anger, and his ability to channel the same in others, explains why Gingrich’s performance at Monday’s debate—when he dismissed Fox News’ Juan Williams’ suggestion that he was playing to racial stereotypes by denigrating food stamps—has resonated so deeply. “I am so tired, personally, of racial prejudice,” says Tommie Derry of Walterboro, a Gingrich supporter. “The way blacks are handling it, if you weren’t racially prejudiced, it’d make you racially prejudiced” Gingrich’s retort to Williams went beyond a simple debating coup; it was cathartic. “When I hear the Juans of the world, I get upset.”

Ahem. A story.

When my third child was nine days old (For those of you keeping track, this means I was nine days postpartum), my second child became very ill. The pediatrician saw us that day and sent us to the specialist, who told me we would have to hospitalize him.

Mr. EmmmieG was not as his desk when I called, so I had to call the receptionist to page him, which caused me to start crying (again, nine days postpartum). The staff at the specialists were bringing me sprite and talking to me in really soft voices by this time.

They got him and I told him what was going on. He said that he’d meet me at the hospital. He was there when I got there (I had had my mother, the sick child, the oldest well child, and the brand new baby all in tow the entire time). He took over and said he’d spend the night with the sick one and I should just go home with the baby. (And Grandma and The Princess, who was four).

There’s nothing in this world like a man you can count on in your hour of need.

Why am I telling this story now? You guess.

No kidding. Newt is maliciously bright and knows a good button to push when he sees it.

I note that the talking heads in Murdoch-land will lend him much support. E.g., today’s opinion piece in the WSJ, The New American Divide

America is coming apart. For most of our nation’s history, whatever the inequality in wealth between the richest and poorest citizens, we maintained a cultural equality known nowhere else in the world—for whites, anyway. “The more opulent citizens take great care not to stand aloof from the people,” wrote Alexis de Tocqueville, the great chronicler of American democracy, in the 1830s. “On the contrary, they constantly keep on easy terms with the lower classes: They listen to them, they speak to them every day.”

Americans love to see themselves this way. But there’s a problem: It’s not true anymore, and it has been progressively less true since the 1960s.

People are starting to notice the great divide. The tea party sees the aloofness in a political elite that thinks it knows best and orders the rest of America to fall in line. The Occupy movement sees it in an economic elite that lives in mansions and flies on private jets. Each is right about an aspect of the problem, but that problem is more pervasive than either political or economic inequality. What we now face is a problem of cultural inequality.

[…]

Over the past 50 years, that common civic culture has unraveled. We have developed a new upper class with advanced educations, often obtained at elite schools, sharing tastes and preferences that set them apart from mainstream America. At the same time, we have developed a new lower class, characterized not by poverty but by withdrawal from America’s core cultural institutions.

[…]

There’s also been a notable change in the rates of less-than-full-time work. Of the men in Fishtown who had jobs, 10% worked fewer than 40 hours a week in 1960, a figure that grew to 20% by 2008. In Belmont, the number rose from 9% in 1960 to 12% in 2008.

[…]

As I’ve argued in much of my previous work, I think that the reforms of the 1960s jump-started the deterioration. Changes in social policy during the 1960s made it economically more feasible to have a child without having a husband if you were a woman or to get along without a job if you were a man; safer to commit crimes without suffering consequences; and easier to let the government deal with problems in your community that you and your neighbors formerly had to take care of.

[…]

Hmmm… 1960… that’s, well, that’s 50 years ago. Before all those nasty social changes in the 1960’s.

This is Newt’s political platform that stormed SC. The AEI shill summed up a portion of that nicely.

Well, one reason for Santorum to stay in would be the specter of neither Romney nor Gingrich gaining a majority. Remember that after Florida there are no more winner-take-all primaries until April, the March primaries being proportional by RNC rule. Thus it is possible to see no one gaining a majority. In that scenario, Santorum might win the nomination by being few people’s first choice, but everyone’s second choice (except for those voting for Crazy Uncle Ron, but those would carry no weight at a convention).

That’s because they are all in denial about how insane the GOP has become. They want anger, resentment, and barely veiled bigotry in their nominee. Mitt can win without it, but the base will never, ever accept him as one of the tribe and enthusiastic enough for him to win the general election. That increase in turnout was the neo-Confederates who were probably going to say home deciding to vote for Newt in the last 48 hours.

I definitely think Newt has the edge on Romney at this point vis a vis the Republican base. Basically, the base can’t stand Romney. Ok, the party elites can’t stand Gingrich but in this Tea Party election, the base is going to speak. Yes, the rich irony is that Dick Armey kinda created the Tea Party and he can’t stand Gingrich. Just love that. Armey played Cantor to Gingrich’s Boehner but with persona’s reversed.

[Iowa Elections Market has Romney at BID 0.612 and Gingrich at BID 0.252. Strangle, Santorum doesn’t even appear.]

Gingrich is a gifted campaigner. He recruited and campaigned a House majority into existence. Not an easy task. You can laugh at him and his multiple foibles all you want but he has that Reaganesque ability to just move forward. Clinton had that too.

But Gingrich has an Achilles heel. The guy is completely undisciplined and listens to no one. Why listen when you’re the smartest motherfucker in the universe? Romney is the opposite and Obama is the opposite. They listen. Very disciplined.

So this could be a matchup between a puncher and an artist. And I think Obama’s discipline would grind Gingrich down. But one thing the Republicans will rue in their choice of Newt. Newt only cares about Newt. Sorry Callista. And he’ll take down the entire party with him in general if he face plants.

Look at these numbers: nationwide Newt Gingrich’s favorability number is 26.5%, unfavorable 58.6%. (see the chart here.)

It would be quite difficult for Newt Gingrich to beat President Obama. The bigger story is that he would likely devastate the congressional Republican party. He’d probably weigh down the GOP up and down the ticket. And that puts the whole thing in much sharper relief for Republican officeholders, committee chairs and money folks.

I doubt that a Romney nomination really helps them all that much. They need somebody with charisma out there, who can convince people to come to the polls in November. Instead, they’d have this cardboard cut-out who would leave people convinced he can’t win, which would mean low Republican turnout and thus a piss-poor showing at the polls.

And all Obama has to do is point out that the Republican goal of getting that 47% to have a net >0 income tax bill means eliminating things like the per child tax credit, capital loss write off, and mortgage & tuition deductions. That should be popular.

That Townhall article comment section is a fountain of stupid (well, most of them are). CL noted that there are a lot of “unwell people” in this country… no doubt if the internet is any evidence.

BTW, this is a good place for me to pimp my latest Page, on why I expect our society to keep producing this type backwards political idiocy. The Old America for which the Tea Partiers lust isn’t going to come back - instead, our society will continue to change to adapt to the breakneck speed of global development. Even if global development is slowed (say, due to problems with oil supplies), the US dominance of the world is slowly fading, and with that will come a loss of testosterone-boosting fighting, and the chest-beaters aren’t going to like that.

Personally, I think it’d be cathartic, and actually a better thing than my earlier expectations.

My expectation was that the ugly base would win in 2016. Four more years of hatred of not only the left but the Establishment Republicans, all festering. And all happening against while the Democrats are running their replacement for Obama after 8 years of white house occupancy.

If Newt gets the nod, it’ll be ugly. But there’ll be less built up cess, there’ll be an incumbent who’s generally liked and respected by the public… bottom line it’ll be less ugly than it could be even with Newt involved.

The other good thing is that what I think of as the cleansing will happen four years sooner. Now, instead of four years from now, the various parts of the GOP will see their bad side standing up, see what they’ve chained their “honor” to. Some wont change. Some will. I expect to see either a quashing or a split, and that will be good for everyone.

I’m looking forward to it in the same way a patient “looks forward” to long, painful surgery and physical therapy — it’s bad, but not going through all that is worse.

re: #424 goddamnedfrank

The real news down the line, assuming he gets the nomination, is that he’s on record stating that the capital gains tax rate should be zero.

Are you sure on this. I was pretty sure That his tax plan was the only one that didn’t zero it all the way out. It went something like no tax on investment income for combined incomes under some level ($200,000?) and 13% above that. Compared with letting that Bush tax cuts fade away it still cuts his tax in half but overall it would only seriously wound the deficit instead of turning it into a smoking hole when the economy finally comes around.

[Don’t ask me how drop from 15% to 13% in the cap gains rate will make any difference in the behavior of people making six figures and up, I don’t have a clue]

For the record, I think all their tax(cut) plans are nuts but for the four left Romney’s is the least crazy.

You could have also said George Wallace. There is no appeal to white economic populism in America without racism mixed in. That’s OWS’s main problem. Blaming Wall Street is blaming white people. Yeah, it’s pie-in-the-sky talk, more ahistoricity. I keep hearing on left-confederate sites people calling for it to “get so bad” that there’s a revolution, or whatever e_e

They’re pretty easy to deal with, though. They don’t have one name, let alone an actual candidate that can unseat the incumbent and get their agenda — whatever that is, today — forwarded. It then becomes pretty clear that they don’t want an agenda forwarded, except the gripe/groan/piss/moan agenda.

Heh, I say, yeah, let Romney or Newt or one of these other GOP a-holes in the WH in 2012, that’ll give you plenty to bellyache about.

Also, someone at culinary school made glazed donuts with fresh maple bacon bits (on outside). Dee-lish, but so very rich. Sort of like that time when someone soaked bacon in a coconut lime mixture, then breaded it with Panco, then deep fried it and slapped it on a soft roll with cucumber and fresh aioli.
