I can’t see the Russian masses yearning for Western democracy but I can see them if Vlad’s games start hurting their bottom line turning on him with great anger.

Do not underestimate their ability to endure suffering if they can be convinced it is for a greater cause. Putin has Mother Russia and Orthodoxy on his side.
