I think it has a lot to do with how we’re approached. Do they come with peaceful intentions and the desire to enlighten us and introduce us to the galactic stage?

Or are they simply here for our planet and consider us an inconvenient “pestilence” that has to be exterminated before the strip-mining can begin?

Regardless, some would never believe “peaceful” intentions of some group obviously more powerful than us (they got here and we can’t travel like that). Others would want to make “peace at any price”.

Let’s say “first contact” was a transmission thru SETI (it is SETI isn’t it). A simple “Hello, are you there?” message.
