I think the same mindset that says “she’s lying” in rape cases exists with domestic violence too. Having had to run for my life years and years ago, I can attest to the fact that there are not enough safe spaces out there for women and their children-it’s better now, but we have miles to go. And there are certainly not enough people who believe women when they speak up. Leaving IS the most dangerous time, I think women instinctively know this and stay for that, and many other reasons. Not enough support being the main reason.

Here in GA, there’s another organization that deals with another aspect of this issue- Pets. Many times the abuser will also hurt the family pet to coerce the victims into staying because most DV shelters will not deal with animals. Ahimsa House finds either temporary or permanent homes for the animals in violent families, they’ve even taken in bearded dragons and iguanas.
