The tribes themselves do a little more research. You have to have proof of family lineage, I mean to be a member. You can marry into the tribe and be eligible for some services. But like with the gaming, you would have to have a child and the child would be eligible for gaming funds, but not you.

My wife is first nations. Her family keeps records through stories that go back ~8 generations. She had a French male ancestor from 6 generations ago and a Scot male from 4 generations ago. My kids are also considered first nations, but because their father -me- is non-aboriginal, their children can’t be classed as first nations. It’s all rather arbitrary.
