Sheesh. Way to frak everything up.

I’m sure the main factor behind their decision is that H.264 is a closed proprietary format, with licensing restrictions. Google’s very committed to open source, and they must have decided that WebM can be competitive with H.264 in the long run.

The last time I checked into this, though, WebM and Theora had some very significant disadvantages compared to H.264. Maybe Google has overcome some of the problems.
