this was pre-9/11 peacetime NG/Army on a rifle range…… it was the absolute surprise factor of the completely, and theoretically impossible, unexpected near death event.

A few years ago (pre 9/11 as well) my buddy was doing at night fire on a NG range in northern MN. Apparently there was some confusion and disorganization in regards to where the firing line was. My buddy was in the foxhole shooting, his spotter was sitting on his butt outside the hole. Someone had thought the firing line was somewhere else and had mistakenly lined up a ways behind them. While my buddy was shooting at the targets, his spotter beside him got shot by the said shooter. My buddy didn’t know it until he finished and looked over at him.
