Meh. Try Toba catastrophe theory. According to it, a VEI-8 eruption came very close to wiping our species out 75,000 years ago.

Krakatoa was a “mere” VEI-6. Last VEI-7 we had was in 1816, a.k.a. “Year without a summer”. And even a VEI-4 can pollute, see 1783 Laki eruption, it reeked so bad Franklin wrote about it.
