The story so far reads that it went all forked up when the officers realized Gates was in fact the homeowner and decided to leave, then Gates decided to follow them out into the street to continue to harass them. That’s when Gates was arrested.

But that’s not the part of the story that folks (or at least I) find strange. The truly strange part of this is that a serving POTUS went on at length about the incident, offering quantities of opinion and speculation in a press conference that even a city mayor would not indulge in at such an early stage.

Exactly.
This was a local matter, and Obama should have remained neutral.
His reaction just gave every police officer in the nation a reason to hesitate before investigating a report of a break-in, and a green light to everyone to behave poorly toward police officers if they don’t like the cops actions.

Not good for public safety, imo.
