It has nothing to do with partisanship, and everything to do with what the republican party has come to represent.

One of my best friends from high school is gay, and married to her partner thanks to the Democratic gov of WA. If she were in a GOPer state, not only would her marriage be impossible, but she would be forbidden from visiting her wife in the hospital*. How would you like it if your best friend (whose opinion you almost always absorb as your own) were subjected to treatment like that? Would you vote for the people who did it?
