U.N. official: 850 likely killed in clashes in Syria

The two-month-long crackdown down by Syrian security forces on anti-government protesters may have left as many as 850 people dead, a U.N. official said on Friday.

The rising death toll was announced as Syrian security forces braced for nationwide protests after Friday prayers. Activists are referring to the turnout as “The Friday of Free Syrian Women,” a commemoration of those females rallying for freedom and a remembrance of those who have been slain.

…The number killed in clashes with government forces has been put by various human rights groups at between 700 and 850 dead, according to Rupert Colville, a spokesman for the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights.
