This may be a fake quote, as it doesn’t appear in Hesiod’s writings. It’s also been attributed to Plato and Aristotle.

I’m pretty sure it’s fake—we have no prose from the 8th century (or the 7th, or the 6th)—Plato had great habit of attributing quotes to others, especially Socrates, who never wrote a word. Everything attributed to him is from Plato—period.
