Don’t know if you remember, but according to my wingnut friend who was explicitly asked the question, “When was America last great?” he responded with exactly that answer (well, technically he said “late 1940’s”, but 1950 is close enough for government work).

Well in the late 1940’s “America was great” because most of the rest of the world was in smoldering ash piles.
