I don’t think it was inevitable. Nobody wanted it, but a perfect storm of unforeseeable consequences made it unavoidable.

Strangely, another perfect storm nearly 20 years later led to Hitler taking over Germany, leading to the second half of WWI.

I disagree that nobody wanted it. In fact, I think EVERYBODY wanted it. Everyone thought it would be swift, decisive, and they’d win.
