Technically, there are several mosques on the grounds of the Taj Mahal. However, I seriously doubt the Manhattan Project is going to end up looking like that. Which really is a shame, the Taj is heartbreakingly beautiful.

the U.S. is a great nation and all, but even if we wanted to and we had a trillion dollars to play with, we couldn’t build something new and different that would echo down the centuries as the Taj Mahal has.

We are a pragmatic people, and the Taj, and the great cathedrals of Europe, are acts of faith written in stone. Whose faith doesn’t seem to be the controlling factor in how great the building ends up being, seen as a work of art.

Whatever else our legacy may be, we do have the Lincoln memorial, the moon landing, the Panama canal, the airplane, the transistor, the photography of Ansel Adams, some music styles, and the Declaration of Independence to our credit.

But great devotional architecture, no.
